RSPCA Victoria has moved to debunk the misconception that pets given as Christmas gifts will end up being surrendered.<\/p>\n
The society\u2019s chief executive officer Dr Liz Walker said multiple studies from around the world and RSCPA Victoria\u2019s own data showed that the care a person gives their pet was not determined by how the animal came into their lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cRSPCA Victoria does not see any increase in the number of pets being surrendered in the months following Christmas,\u201d Dr Walker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd throughout the year, we rarely see an animal surrendered because it was an unwanted gift.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, she said she would not recommend pets as a \u201csurprise\u201d Christmas gift.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile a lot of gift-givers want an element of surprise, we\u2019d suggest the surprise could be the destination to an animal adoption centre.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe adoption process includes education about animal care and responsible pet ownership, which is essential information for any new pet owner.\u201d<\/p>\n
Anyone planning on gifting a pet should fully consider the recipient\u2019s circumstances and their ability to care for the animal long-term.<\/p>\n
\u201cPet ownership is a commitment that can last 10 to 20 years, so it\u2019s really important that thought is given to the type of pet chosen,\u201d Dr Walker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you are thinking about giving the gift of a pet, buying a gift voucher from an animal shelter can be a really thoughtful gesture that allows the receiver to personally select their new companion.\u201d<\/p>\n
RSPCA Victoria offers this advice to anyone considering gifting a pet this Christmas:<\/p>\n
It\u2019s important that the receiver has already expressed a strong desire for a pet<\/p>\n
Ensure that they have the ability to be a responsible pet owner for both the type of animal and the animal\u2019s individual needs<\/p>\n
Before adopting, consider how a new pet will fit into living arrangements, including other humans and pets. Animal personalities vary, just like humans, so it can take time for pets to settle into their new home.<\/p>\n
