CONSTRUCTION of Drysdale\u2019s $7.592-million sustainably designed, \u201cclever and creative\u201d library will start next month, following the awarding of the tender.<\/p>\n
The library will be part of the new Drysdale Town Centre in Wyndham Street and will feature communal spaces, quiet study areas, an adult changing places facility, a City of Greater Geelong customer service point, a green roof, an internal courtyard garden and resource efficient systems.<\/p>\n
A W Nicholson Pty Ltd will build the innovative library using low-carbon strategies during construction, following its tender selection which the council based on project experience, expertise, value for money and project risks.<\/p>\n
Greater Geelong Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan said libraries were more than just books and technology; “they importantly increase literacy and foster a love of learning, and are a safe place to meet people, attend activities and develop new skills\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Drysdale Library\u2019s design is quite striking and will become a centrepiece of the township, with connected biodiversity sweeping from the surrounding parkland, into the gathering space and up to the building\u2019s green roof.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis exciting project complements our planned investment in new libraries in Armstrong Creek and Lara, upgrades to Chilwell Library and our annual funding of the Geelong Regional Library Corporation, all highlighting the Council\u2019s commitment to provide access to high standard libraries across Greater Geelong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bellarine Ward councillor Jim Mason said the clever and creative building, in keeping with Geelong\u2019s UNESCO City of Design membership, would be highly sustainable and accessible to people of all ages and abilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe thank the Victorian Government for supporting this worthy project,\u201d Cr Mason said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Drysdale Library is for the community and has been shaped by the community, including the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, through insightful contributions on the design and purpose of the building.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bellarine MP Lisa Neville welcomed the tender announcement and the anticipated start of construction in November.<\/p>\n
