{"id":45889,"date":"2021-10-18T04:15:49","date_gmt":"2021-10-17T17:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=45889"},"modified":"2021-10-28T11:36:36","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T00:36:36","slug":"loneliness-soars-during-the-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/loneliness-soars-during-the-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Loneliness soars during the pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The widereaching impact of the pandemic is highlighted in a new report which found more than a quarter (27 per cent) of Australians experienced loneliness for the first time during COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Telstra&#8217;s Talking Loneliness report revealed almost two in five (38 per cent) Australians said they had never felt lonelier than they have in lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>The report also found:<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbFour in 10 Australians regularly feel lonely<br \/>\n\u30fbNine in 10 Australians have experienced loneliness, with almost half (48 per cent) too embarrassed to admit it<br \/>\n\u30fbMore than half (54 per cent) of Australians say they &#8216;often&#8217; or &#8216;sometimes&#8217; lack companionship<br \/>\n\u30fbA quarter (24 per cent ) of Australians don&#8217;t feel they have anyone to talk to, with Gen Z (32 per cent) and Millennials (26 per cent) the most likely age groups to feel this way, and<br \/>\n\u30fbMore than a third (35 per cent) of Australians admit they rarely or never feel like they are part of a group of friends.<\/p>\n<p>The stark statistics prompted the telecommunications giant to call on the community to start a conversation about loneliness and work together to combat it.<\/p>\n<p>The research was conducted for Telstra by YouGov in September 2021 in consultation with leading loneliness researcher and clinical psychologist Dr Michelle Lim.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45891\" style=\"width: 238px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45891\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/10\/image-20180508-34009-1op86ii.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"238\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Michelle Lim.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It highlights the growing issue of loneliness in Australia and explores its impact on individuals, communities and society at large.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Lim said loneliness was the next public health crisis facing Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Loneliness, when persistent or severe, hurts our health, communities, and society,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you feel lonely, it is important to understand that your feelings are normal.
