{"id":46413,"date":"2021-11-06T04:00:29","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T17:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=46413"},"modified":"2021-11-06T09:24:19","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T22:24:19","slug":"pink-day-empowers-pre-schoolers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/pink-day-empowers-pre-schoolers\/","title":{"rendered":"Pink Day empowers pre-schoolers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CUPCAKES, pink smoothies, fun activities and open discussion have empowered pre-schoolers to help scientists find a cure for cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by cancer survivor and kinder mum Kristy Weston, the Bop Bop Karrong Barwon Heads centre\u2019s Pink Day event raised $380 and was a positive experience for all involved, particularly the kindergarten children.<\/p>\n<p>Kindergarten educator Danielle Chambers, who organised the special event and had been through her own breast cancer experience three years ago, said Kristy\u2019s daughter Matilda was in her three-year-old kinder class last year when Kristy was going through treatment for breast cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46414\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-46414 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG_9322KrystyWes_23531-e1636150978845.jpg?_t=1636150978\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kristy Weston has been through cancer treatment and inspired a Pink Day fundraiser at Bop Bop Karrong children&#8217;s centre where her daughter Matilda attends four-year-old kinder.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatilda is in four-year-old kinder this year and Kristy has completed her full course of treatment, and she\u2019s well,\u201d Danielle said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that Kristy and her family have gone through the process, our Bop Bop community wanted to raise awareness and show our support for Matilda by giving her a positive experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about Pink Day and raising money for research so medicine can be approved, and outcomes are much better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids were comfortable talking about cancer and they were quite willing to reflect on the meaning of the day, which led to a discussion about illness and cancer with a big focus on how they were doing something proactive by raising money.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46420\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46420\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-46420\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG_9319DanielleC_33606-e1636151033857.jpg?_t=1636151033\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bop Bop Karrong educator Danielle Chambers organised a Pink Day event to raise money and show support of local mum and breast cancer survivor Kristy Weston and her daughter Matilda.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch shows that we can reduce that trauma by not being afraid to have those experiences; we can do that by showing support and giving the kids an opportunity to be actively doing something to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danielle said going through cancer was \u201ca difficult journey for anyone\u201d and it could have a negative impact on children, so it was important for them to see a positive outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Kristy is known in the Bop Bop community for her \u201camazing cupcakes\u201d which she decorated with the children during the Pink Day program, which also included healthy pink smoothies with watermelon and strawberries and special activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Bop Bop parents committee also supported the event with a raffle, providing prizes on the day, and also made an additional donation to the Pink Day fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CUPCAKES, pink smoothies, fun activities and open discussion have empowered pre-schoolers to help scientists find a cure for cancer.
