{"id":46462,"date":"2021-11-08T04:00:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-07T17:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=46462"},"modified":"2021-11-03T12:00:49","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T01:00:49","slug":"belles-inspired-by-uk-activist-to-ride-for-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/belles-inspired-by-uk-activist-to-ride-for-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Belles inspired by UK activist to ride for climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A GROUP of Bellarine-based cyclists have helped spread the word of climate change in their own way, inspired by a16-year-old climate activist on the other side of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Climate activist Jessie Stevens rode 917 kilometres from Devon, England to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland as part of her #ride2COP26 initiative to highlight the need for more drastic changes in the face of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>From this, local cycling group The Bellarine Belles, rode almost 3,000 kilometres over the span of 11 days \u201calongside\u201d Ms Stevens between October 20 to October 31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we are out almost every day cycling, over the last three years we have been observing the effects of climate change here in the region with all the bushfires, the droughts and the sudden storms,\u201d Bellarine Belles member and Indented Head resident Annie Proctor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also well aware of the effects of climate change here in Australia and were inspired by young Jessie\u2019s effort and commitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we decided to contact Ms Stevens about her ride, and she was really grateful for the support from the other side of the world and we decided to do our own ride and try to spread the global message of climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Proctor admitted that the group got \u201ca little bit carried away\u201d and rode more than triple the distance that they originally intended for a total distance 2799 kilometres. A massive achievement, nevertheless.<\/p>\n<p>The Bellarine Belles cycling group has been running for six years according to Ms Proctor, describing it as an informal support group encouraging more women to get into cycling and meet other people on the Bellarine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 536px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/Belles1_93635.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bellarine Belles members Vicki Perrett, Sue Jager, Irene Dawson, Annie Proctor, Lisa Boyle, Diane Chaffers after a big ride.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Participation numbers on a single ride can range from 12 to 20 women in the group, but more than 200 individuals are signed up to the Bellarine Belles\u2019 Facebook page where the group coordinates their rides.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Proctor said 21 women in the group signed up to the do the challenge \u201calongside\u201d Ms Stephens in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about Jessie\u2019s mission, visit peoplepeddlepower.wordpress.com or head to the Bellarine Belles\u2019 public Facebook page to get involved with the group.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A GROUP of Bellarine-based cyclists have helped spread the word of climate change in their own way, inspired by a16-year-old climate activist on the other side of the world.
