{"id":46496,"date":"2021-11-04T04:45:47","date_gmt":"2021-11-03T17:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=46496"},"modified":"2021-11-03T13:53:39","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T02:53:39","slug":"east-geelong-netball-dominate-gdfnl-awards-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/east-geelong-netball-dominate-gdfnl-awards-night\/","title":{"rendered":"East Geelong netball dominate GDFNL Awards Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EAST Geelong Netball Club has capped off an impressive 2021 campaign at this season\u2019s Geelong and District Netball League\u2019s Awards night.<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles were able to hold their head high after collecting not only the sporting body\u2019s top individual honour for one of their elite A graders in Ashleigh Cushion, but also the 2021 Club Championship.<\/p>\n<p>These awards indicate the Eagles now represent the highest standard of netball in the Geelong region, an accomplishment club coordinator Brooke O\u2019Leary looks forward to defending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last year for the East Geelong Netball Club has been our best year success-wise on the field yet,\u201d O\u2019Leary said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously it had a disappointing ending because we did not get to finalise things in the finals, but speaking to the coaches, players and Ashleigh, it just makes you all the more hungrier for next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fervour for next season is increasing at a fast pace,\u201d O\u2019Leary added, mentioning that in a recent meeting with coaches last week regarding preparations for preseason, the players were excited to get stuck into it as early as November.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst those players is the newly crowned A Grade Margaret Webb Medal winner Ashleigh Cushion, who tallied 18 votes on her way to be crowned the league\u2019s Best and Fairest with Ellie Vincent of Werribee Centrals finishing a close second on 16 votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a shock really when I found out I had won,\u201d Cushion said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I had a good season, but at the same time I didn\u2019t really notice because as a whole, we had a really good team, and it is quite hard to separate us into who is good and who isn\u2019t. It\u2019s a team thing really.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have so much support at the club, and I feel like I\u2019m just playing with friends the whole time.\u201d<br \/>\nIn addition to Cushion making the GDNL\u2019s Team of the Year, six more Eagles would also make the coveted roster. On top of that, co-coaches David Boyce and Justine Radford of East Geelong were named coaches of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 519px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG_6656_49234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"346\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Grade Best and Fairest Ashleigh Cushion (left) at Richmond Oval&#8217;s netball courts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>East Geelong\u2019s Tahlia Billows took out the Reserves Best and Fairest runner-up crown, Darci Allen won the C Grade Best and Fairest Award and Erin Fogarty placed second in D Grade\u2019s medal count to solidify the club\u2019s position in the club championships.<\/p>\n<p>East Geelong convincingly finished with a total of 308 points over North Geelong\u2019s 256 points.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EAST Geelong Netball Club has capped off an impressive 2021 campaign at this season\u2019s Geelong and District Netball League\u2019s Awards night.
