{"id":48006,"date":"2022-01-11T04:00:27","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T17:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=48006"},"modified":"2022-01-05T13:50:50","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T02:50:50","slug":"rock-to-ramp-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/rock-to-ramp-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Anglesea welcomes back popular Rock to Ramp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OPEN water swimmers braved challenging surf conditions to contest Anglesea\u2019s Rock to Ramp race earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club\u2019s major fundraiser drew almost 900 participants to compete in the slate of swimming events, from the 2.5-kilometre main race to 600 metre events.<\/p>\n<p>Club members expect this summer\u2019s Rock to Ramp would raise around $30,000 for its beach safety programs, after the 2020 race couldn\u2019t go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Event director Tom Cullen said choppy surf worrying inexperienced swimmers and ongoing COVID impacts had a slight impact on competition numbers, but that the race was still an overall success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe event went really well, we had 887 participants in the end,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic result considering the conditions which were quite challenging, with strong south-easterly winds and a fair bit of current moving water around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen there\u2019s people\u2019s concerns around COVID, but it\u2019s obviously great being back in the water after not being able to run the event in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit down but not far, and we still had some great performances in the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48016\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48016\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/Untitled-design-25-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/Untitled-design-25-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/Untitled-design-25-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/Untitled-design-25-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/01\/Untitled-design-25.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Gilling crosses the line in first place of the 2.5km race.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Cullen said the club was pleased to finish the event without serious injuries to maintain its proud safety record<\/p>\n<p>Matt Gilling was the star of the day, finishing fastest in the 2.5km swim in 26:28 minutes, just five seconds ahead of Thomas Hay.
