{"id":48369,"date":"2022-01-21T11:50:36","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T00:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/geelong-to-open-cricket-world-cup\/"},"modified":"2022-01-21T12:11:06","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T01:11:06","slug":"geelong-to-open-cricket-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/geelong-to-open-cricket-world-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong to open cricket World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Geelong cricket fans will see the first ball of this year\u2019s T20 cricket World Cup bowled in their backyard.<\/p>\n<p>The sport\u2019s governing body, the International Cricket Council, released the tournament schedule at Geelong today, which placed six games in three days at Kardinia Park in October.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kardinia Park has a proud history of cricket and we look forward to welcoming the ICC Men&#8217;s T20 World Cup in 2022, alongside passionate fans cheering on their country,&#8221; Kardinia Park Stadium Trust CEO Gerard Griffin said.<\/p>\n<p>The stadium will host a round robin qualifying round to kick off the tournament, starting with the opener between 2014 champions Sri Lanka and Namibia.<\/p>\n<p>Two further countries will head to Geelong for the opening round following a global qualifier to be played in Oman next month.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland, Nepal and Canada are among the nations vying for final spots in the tournament draw.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63571 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/In-Article-Picture-4.png?_t=1642726207\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kardinia Park will host double-headers on October 16, 18 and 20 to lead-off the World Cup, alongside a concurrent play-in at Hobart.<\/p>\n<p>The top two teams from the Geelong group will join the big boys divided in two pools of six to decide semi-final places.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Australia kicks off its title defence on October 22 against New Zealand in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>The current world champions\u2019 only guaranteed fixture in Victoria is against England at the MCG on October 28, but it could return for the November 13 final if it qualifies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Geelong cricket fans will see the first ball of this year\u2019s T20 cricket World Cup bowled in their backyard.
