{"id":48989,"date":"2022-02-17T04:00:32","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T17:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=48989"},"modified":"2022-02-17T08:09:22","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T21:09:22","slug":"wreck2reef-success-after-two-year-hiatus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/wreck2reef-success-after-two-year-hiatus\/","title":{"rendered":"Wreck2Reef success after two year hiatus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ONE of the Bellarine region&#8217;s most iconic open water swims, the Wreck2Reef, was brought back to life after a two-year absence at Indented Head on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Tough easterly winds and a heavy chop did not stop around 250 competitors from tackling the 1.2km and 2.5km open swim events on February 12.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer the Wreck2Reef, Indented Head Yacht Club&#8217;s largest fundraiser, was cancelled less than 24 hours before the race after Victoria went into a five-day COVID-19 statewide lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>Wreck2Reef race director Andrew Dix said participants were glad to see the event return in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The competitors are glad we ran it again, they are all happy to see us back running it after being cancelled at the last-minute last year with COVID,&#8221; Dix said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They acknowledged the conditions out there were pretty tough.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s one of the worst easterlies you can get \u2026 that&#8217;s what open water swimming is all about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49018\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49018\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49018 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/02\/Embedded-web-27.png?_t=1644901926\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/02\/Embedded-web-27.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/02\/Embedded-web-27-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wreck2Reef organisers welcomed back swimmers and crowds after last year&#8217;s sudden cancellation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne&#8217;s Owen Leggett, a Brunswick resident, won the 2.5km event in 37 minutes and four seconds.<\/p>\n<p>It was a mixed day for Leggett, who suffered a calf injury as he approached the 2.5km finish line and was unable to compete in the 1.2km swim.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The calf went right on the edge of the water (at the finish), I fell over and hopped across the line to maintain a bit of dignity,&#8221; Leggett said.<\/p>\n<p>Leggett finished ahead of second-placed Nigel Fanning (37:18), a former Ireland world triathlon competitor, and Ocean Grove local Mark Stone (37:23).<\/p>\n<p>Bethany Forster was the first female across the finish line in the 2.5km in 46:54. Craig Davis won the 1.2km swim in 15:43 ahead of runner-up Nigel Fanning (15:58), while Mark Stone (16:17) finished third.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle Tulloch won the female 1.2km swim in 17:21 ahead of Alexandra Cateriano and Katrina Morrow who came third.<\/p>\n<p>Next summer&#8217;s Wreck2Reef is scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ONE of the Bellarine region&#8217;s most iconic open water swims, the Wreck2Reef, was brought back to life after a two-year absence at Indented Head on Saturday.
