<\/p>\nSINCE 1902, the current Point Lonsdale Lighthouse has played a critical role in guiding commercial vessels safely through the narrow entrance to Port Phillip Bay.<\/p>\n
Today, the lighthouse is a vital part of the state-of-the-art Vessel Traffic Service system operated by Ports Victoria, ensuring the safety of vessels.<\/p>\n
The staffed service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week across Port Phillip Bay and Geelong.<\/p>\n
With more than 3000 commercial ships visiting the bay each year and calling at the ports of Melbourne and Geelong, the service is a key part of Ports Victoria\u2019s commitment to the safety of all vessels in its areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur key focus has always been on safety,\u201d newly appointed Ports Victoria CEO Brendan Webb said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd while much of our public focus is often around recreational vessels with our familiar \u2018Keep Clear of Big Ships\u2019 message, one of our major responsibilities is to ensure the safe passage of the much larger commercial vessels that visit our waters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Point Lonsdale Lighthouse is not only a wonderful piece of local history, but also an important visual reminder of the need to keep all vessels \u2013 big and small \u2013 safe not only in the waters of the Rip, but everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Webb has taken on his new role following the merger of the Victorian Regional Channels Authority and Victorian Ports Corporation (Melbourne) to create Ports Victoria.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m delighted that Ports Victoria has its head office in Geelong because the commercial ports of Victoria and our supporting industries make such a significant contribution to the Victorian economy,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt the ports sector is growing, and our responsibilities and opportunities have never been greater,<\/p>\n
\u201cPart of our role is to become a maritime centre of excellence. We will become a hub to grow Victoria\u2019s maritime expertise, providing specialist knowledge to government. This will be important for the integration of the ports system within Victoria\u2019s crucial strategic freight management.\u201d<\/p>\n
