A WELL-KEPT bowling green, a new clubhouse set to be built and a thriving social community are just some of the reasons why Armstrong Creek residents are being urged to take up lawn bowling in Barwon Heads.<\/p>\n
Barwon Heads Bowling Club considers itself a “small” club where each member is valued as much as the next, whether it’s engaging in a competitive game or just a friendly roll.<\/p>\n
“We’re just a small local club in contrast to some of the bigger clubs across the region,” Bowls Club treasurer Bernie McCartney said.<\/p>\n
“Given we are the closest club to areas like Warralily in Armstrong Creek, we encourage nearby residents in the Armstrong Creek region to come down and give the club a go.<\/p>\n
“We have a great balance of social members and competitive bowlers and it’s a terrific place for new members to jump aboard and meet new people.”<\/p>\n
Barwon Heads Bowling Club currently fields three pennant sides to compete against other local bowling clubs for those who seek more of a competitive flair, but being a “smaller” club, Barwon Heads has a high level of camaraderie among its more social members.<\/p>\n
“Each Monday we get together for a social bowl at 12.30pm before heading into our current clubhouse for an afternoon tea and a couple of ales.<\/p>\n
“Even if a new member has not played lawn bowls before, we are more than happy to spend time teaching the game.”<\/p>\n
All 110 members of the Barwon Heads Bowling Club will also benefit from the construction of the club’s new pavilion.<\/p>\n
Geelong council contributed $500,000 in October 2021 towards the Barwon Heads Bowls Club Pavilion redevelopment.<\/p>\n
The announcement was made to match funding from the Commonwealth government with an additional $200,000 from the state government.<\/p>\n
Construction of the new clubhouse is expected to be completed at some stage this year.<\/p>\n
