{"id":50841,"date":"2022-04-15T04:45:45","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T18:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=50841"},"modified":"2022-04-13T10:05:55","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T00:05:55","slug":"local-lifesavers-represent-at-aussie-champs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/local-lifesavers-represent-at-aussie-champs\/","title":{"rendered":"Local lifesavers represent at Aussie Champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL surf life saving clubs have performed exceptionally at this year\u2019s national championships as athletes brought home five gold, two silver and three bronze medals, across water, lifesaving and surf boat disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Life Saving Clubs from all over the Bellarine and Surf Coast regions made their way up to the Gold Coast for the 2022 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Aussies\u2019 welcomed more than 7,200 athletes from more than 300 surf lifesaving clubs across Australia, a record attendance for the annual meet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 341px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/MalcolmFreake_6_35280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"455\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Malcom Freake of Fairhaven SLSC showed no signs of ageing finishing 7th in the male beach sprint.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Torquay SLSC displayed finalists at all age groups with Harris Henderson and Millie Harris making it to their respective finals in the under 15 and under 17 board race.<\/p>\n<p>2022\u2019s women\u2019s Jim Wall IronMan winner Sophie Thomas continued performing at an elite level making it to the open female board and surf race finals for Torquay SLSC.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out Torquay\u2019s finalists included Thomas\u2019s male Jim Wall counterpart Matt Gilling in the open male surf race (16th), while fellow club members Jayden Schram and Ben Harris made it to the last event of the open male board race as well.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay SLSC also finished 14th in the open female board relay and 11th in the open men\u2019s board relay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe event as a whole was one of community,\u201d Torquay SLSC club captain Julian Sweeney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone was happy to be back, and it was good to see some familiar faces too from the big clubs to the small clubs from across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am also exceptionally proud of the efforts our club made from our junior competitors to our open competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notably for Lorne SLSC, William Newton was happy with an 11th placed finish in the under 14 surf race.<br \/>\nOcean Grove SLSC represented the Bellarine with an abundance of gusto.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/HamishBowden_2_66880.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"448\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lorne SLSC&#8217;s Hamish Bowden secured 25th in the under 19 male surf race.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hudson Pearce placed 13th in the under 15 board race, Tia McNaughton placed 10th in the under 17 female ski race and Campbell Asher was a feature in the under 17 male surf race final.<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea SLSC proved superior on the sand with its Rescue &amp;
