{"id":50970,"date":"2022-04-23T04:15:04","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T18:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=50970"},"modified":"2022-04-19T15:28:30","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T05:28:30","slug":"new-facilities-for-coast-guard-queenscliff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/new-facilities-for-coast-guard-queenscliff\/","title":{"rendered":"New facilities for Coast Guard Queenscliff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LONG-PLANNED expansion of Coast Guard Queenscliff\u2019s maritime operations are progressing with planning approvals for a new 12\u00d720 metre shed granted and building works expected to commence with months.<\/p>\n<p>The service is also in negotiations with Marine Search and Rescue (MSAR) Victoria for an upgrade and expansion of its existing vessel fleet, with its current nine-metre Bass Strait now over 20 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone recognises the need for an upgrade to the current coast guard vessel, the minister, local member, EMV (Emergency Management Victoria), we\u2019d like to think everybody\u2019s working hard to find it,\u201d Flotilla Commander Michael Donohue said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Donohue said there\u2019s similar recognition across the board of the need for a second vessel at the Queenscliff end of the bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMSAR are trying to organise funding, we\u2019ve been having discussions with our local member Lisa Neville, she\u2019s having discussions with the Emergency Services Minister, and we\u2019ll wait with bated breath for budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51024\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51024\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-62.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-62.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-62-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CG09 towing a boat back to port from near Swan Island.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe replacement for our current vessel, CG9, will cost $1.2 million, not an insignificant amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard is looking to replace its CG9 vessel with a 11.4 metre Steber Craft, and is looking at either a 6.5 metre Gemini, or a 8.5 metre Naiad, for its second craft.<\/p>\n<p>A series of state and federal grants totalling over $200,000 is enabling the Coast Guard to build the new shed, repair its VHF communications tower, upgrade security and construct a new fence and gate around the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Donohue said a building contract has been signed and expects the first sod to be turned within four to six weeks once a building permit is granted.<\/p>\n<p>In the last nine months CGQ attended 67 jobs, assisting 125 people to safety on vessels with a combined value of over $2 million.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LONG-PLANNED expansion of Coast Guard Queenscliff\u2019s maritime operations are progressing with planning approvals for a new 12\u00d720 metre shed granted and building works expected to commence with months.
