{"id":50976,"date":"2022-04-22T04:00:21","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T18:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=50976"},"modified":"2022-04-19T15:31:11","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T05:31:11","slug":"anzac-day-commemorations-return-in-full","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/anzac-day-commemorations-return-in-full\/","title":{"rendered":"Anzac Day commemorations return in full"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ANZAC Day services will return to the Bellarine later this month unencumbered by pandemic restrictions of recent years that have limited commemorations.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Grove will be the first to gather, with a 6am assembly for a 6.15am service.<\/p>\n<p>Assembly for the main march is 9.30am at the Terrace, accompanied by the Geelong Pipes and Drums the parade will be led by Royal Australian Navy lieutenant Commander James Chamberlain, who\u2019ll be travelling from HMAS Cerberus, and is the guest speaker for the Ocean Grove Park service at 10am.<\/p>\n<p>In a busy day for the Geelong Pipes and Drums, the band will first be at Barwon Heads in time for an 8.30am assembly and 8.45am step-off from the corner of Bridge Road and Hitchcock Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The march to Barwon Heads Community Hall will be led by Geelong-raised and now Canberra-based Navy Captain Vaughn Rixon, who is guest speaker on day for 9am service.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51013\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51013 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-61.png?_t=1650345510\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-61.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-61-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Grove service in 2019. Photo: MICHAEL CHAMBERS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Graduating from Belmont High School and joining the Navy in 1977, Captain Rixon was following in the armed forces footsteps of his father Stan Rixon, a WWII prisoner of war (POW) who after his 1945 escape from captivity in Japan, went on to found the POW association in Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the first time that I\u2019ve been able to move interstate in a couple of years,\u201d Captain Rixon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last few years I\u2019ve been in country NSW, it will be nice to return to Geelong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Grove RSL secretary Richard Lewis is similarly pleased at the relatively unhindered commemorations this year, predicting crowds of between 500 to 1000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t had to do all these COVID protocols as we have in the past, no facemasks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like everyone to contribute to the Anzac appeal, supporting veteran welfare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a record in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads for the poppy appeal last year, we\u2019d like to see the same for the Anzac Day appeal this year.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANZAC Day services will return to the Bellarine later this month unencumbered by pandemic restrictions of recent years that have limited commemorations.
