Her colleague, Donna, said she and others were being asked to do more work with less staff and routinely found themselves unable to provide appropriate levels of care as a result.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe struggle to cut their fingernails \u2026 we\u2019ve got people waiting hours to go to the toilet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Donna said it\u2019s not unusual to ask that if a resident is wearing a nappy then they should soil themselves because two staff members are needed to hoist them on to a toilet and a second carer is not available.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re really exhausted, we\u2019re getting injured,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s like a factory now, just processing people.\u201d<\/p>\n
The result, Donna said, is that the industry is struggling to retain quality staff.<\/p>\n
Jason, a former aged carer now working in mental health, similarly described his time in the sector as being on a \u201cconveyor belt\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt my facility you were lucky to get a shower every second day.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the average Aussie worked a week in aged care they\u2019d be out in the streets calling for reform.\u201d<\/p>\n
Libby Coker said her 86-year-old mother, a former nurse, told her \u201cdon\u2019t put me in one of those facilities\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere shouldn\u2019t be a fear of going into aged care homes,\u201d Donna said.<\/p>\n
\u201cFamilies feel guilty for putting family in aged care, they shouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
