I felt heavy in both of my arms and felt out of sorts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a typical male, I decided nothing major was wrong so I just went home to lie down for a little while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Partner Traci knew it was rare for the councillor to come home from swimming and rest, so she drove him to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI count myself fortunate that my partner was home at the time. Otherwise, I\u2019d probably be dead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we got to the Epworth and I felt vague, the doctor said to me \u2018you\u2019re having a heart attack, I can see it on my screen\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had done the Danger 1000 in January and got very breathless, which I put down to getting old. But it was actually my heart not functioning. My heart was trying to tell me it was crook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor \u2013 who had a stent procedure \u2013 will return to the Danger 1000 Ocean Swim on January 6, followed by his debut in the Lorne Pier to Pub on January 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the heart attack, I asked my GP how much exercise I could do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me \u2018whatever you do today, double it tomorrow\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the first day, I walked down my steep 80-metre driveway and back, then I had to sleep for a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that if you think something\u2019s not quite right with your health, go to the doctor and tell them everything. If they tell you to take a stress test, then do the stress test.
