{"id":51964,"date":"2022-05-12T04:45:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T18:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=51964"},"modified":"2022-05-11T14:10:32","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T04:10:32","slug":"thomson-tigers-off-to-a-red-hot-start-in-2022-gdfl-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/thomson-tigers-off-to-a-red-hot-start-in-2022-gdfl-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomson Tigers off to a red hot start in 2022 GDFL season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A REJUVENATED Thomson Tigers Football side is being driven off field by recent coaching acquisition Paul Lynch, having only lost one of the first five games of the season to sit tied for second on the GDFL table.<\/p>\n<p>Five rounds into a stacked and competitive Geelong District Football League season, Inverleigh and Geelong West currently sit atop the perch with an undefeated record, while Thomson and East Geelong sit tied for second.<\/p>\n<p>Going into 2022, the Tigers behind Lynch\u2019s prowess, looked to concentrate on a defensive \u2018hard to score against\u2019 structure which would hopefully return them to premiership contention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a club, we\u2019ve been absolutely rapt with the player and staff\u2019s buy-in to Paul\u2019s gameplan which is currently holding us in a good spot,\u201d football operations manager Troy Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a strong start to the season, however, in saying that we do recognise that there is plenty of games left in the season and as a club we have plenty of areas that we want to improve on to keep us at the top end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No stranger to the coaching ranks, Lynch has tasted premiership success as a coach with GFL clubs Lara and Colac, as well as Birregurra in the Colac and District League.<\/p>\n<p>Under Lynch, with a fresh-looking squad that includes 10-plus strong recruits, the Tigers defensive focus has seen them only concede over 10 goals twice in the first five games of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a coach, my philosophy is around defence and it\u2019s a mantra that has been successful so far for us this year,\u201d Lynch said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all learn how to attack when we are youngsters, however I believe that defense comes with time and it\u2019s something that comes with practice and effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a club we recognise that being defence first makes us hard to score against and therefore by doing so, we can combine our strong back half efforts into good attacking up forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69369\" style=\"width: 495px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69369 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/061A3328_00997.jpg?_t=1652143856\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"330\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thomson recruit Blake O&#8217;Halloran dodging an East Geelong defender. Photo: MARCEL BERENS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A potent attacking unit including former Newcomb Power spearhead Andrew Mead-Harding, veteran Daniel Freeman and 2016 Whitley medallist Brent Macleod are currently leading the charge up forward with the trio combining for 40 goals in the first five weeks of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our first five matches, we\u2019ve had plenty of inside 50s, however we are constantly trying to improve on our efficiency when we hit the scoreboard as we\u2019ve kicked more behinds than goals in most games this season,\u201d Lynch said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Freeman has really been leading the charge in a scoring regard and has been huge for us so far in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe seem to have a good amount of firepower in that forward rotation so it\u2019ll be about getting those guys used to playing with each other and evening the scoring ability across the entirety of our team.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69367\" style=\"width: 558px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69367\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/061A3340_92291.jpg?_t=1652143816\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"372\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Round 5 Thomson Tigers v East Geelong Eagles action.
