A LIFESAVING skills program at Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is giving young people with disabilities the chance to learn about beach safety and water awareness.<\/p>\n
Originally started by volunteers from Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club, the Starfish Nippers program is now being run at lifesaving clubs around Australia, including Point Lonsdale.<\/p>\n
The program ensures students with disabilities and their parents can be involved with surf skills and lifesaving like their siblings, friends and others on the beach.<\/p>\n
Activities include the traditional beach games and activities, beach running, beach flags, swimming, board skills, water familiarisation, beach, water and surf safety.<\/p>\n
Starfish Nippers caters for children and young adults aged 7-18 years with special needs, including autism, attention deficit disorder, Down\u2019s syndrome, Asperger\u2019s syndrome, physical and intellectual disabilities and learning difficulties.<\/p>\n
The Point Lonsdale SLSC said it believed everyone deserved access to Nippers and that the popular Point Lonsdale Nippers had been greatly enhanced by the addition of the Starfish program.<\/p>\n
Starfish Nippers sessions will be conducted from 9.30am-11am on the same days as the club\u2019s existing Nippers program.<\/p>\n
