{"id":52753,"date":"2022-05-26T04:30:50","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T18:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=52753"},"modified":"2022-05-25T09:19:53","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T23:19:53","slug":"australian-indigenous-surfing-titles-back-at-djarrk-bells-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/australian-indigenous-surfing-titles-back-at-djarrk-bells-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles back at Djarrk (Bells Beach)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOR the first time since the pandemic hit, the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles are back at Djarrk (Bells Beach) from May 27 until May 29.<\/p>\n<p>The event, presented by Rip Curl, is set to bring together the country\u2019s best Indigenous surfing talents for a celebration of culture on Wadawurrung Country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled that the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles is back in 2022,\u201d Surfing Victoria Indigenous aquatics manager Jordie Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be the first time the event has run since 2019 and will be an amazing celebration of Indigenous culture at a sacred traditional place like Djarrk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 10th year at Bells Beach, the event is a significant gathering that usually attracts north of 100 surfers from across the country, with many communities being represented.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70569\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70569 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Australian-Indigenous-Surfing-2019-resized-for-website-1080x675-cropped-600x380.png?_t=1653370838\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winners of the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles in 2019. Photo: SURFING VICTORIA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Surfers set to take part in the contest include former event champion and popular free surfer\/artist Otis Carey (Coffs Harbour), Russel Moloney (Shelly Beach) and former women\u2019s division winner Summer Simon (Port Kembla).<\/p>\n<p>This year is also set to feature a whole new range of faces, with Campbell saying many surfers who will take part in their first Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t wait to see the new talent that is out there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also stoked that our women\u2019s and junior divisions are looking to include the biggest field they\u2019ve ever had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Surfing action is set to kick off at 9am at Bells Beach tomorrow (May 27).<\/p>\n<p>A traditional welcome and smoking ceremony is set to take place tonight (May 26) from 4.30-5pm at Bells Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Live scores, video and photos for the event can be found at australianindigenoussurfingtitles.com.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles is presented by Rip Curl and supported by the Victorian Government, HeadSox, Woolworths, VicHealth, Play it Safe by the Water, Wathaurong Cooperative,<\/p>\n<p>Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Surf Coast Events, Surfing Australia, ONABAC, VACSAL, Strong Brother Strong Sister, Surfline, Yakeen Safety and Surfing Victoria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOR the first time since the pandemic hit, the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles are back at Djarrk (Bells Beach) from May 27 until May 29.
