{"id":55201,"date":"2022-07-07T04:00:22","date_gmt":"2022-07-06T18:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=55201"},"modified":"2022-07-06T11:31:05","modified_gmt":"2022-07-06T01:31:05","slug":"green-light-for-greenhouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/green-light-for-greenhouse\/","title":{"rendered":"Green light for greenhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW $20,000 greenhouse will open all sorts of new avenues for a community garden tucked away in Barwon Heads.<\/p>\n<p>Barwon Heads Community Arts Garden co-ordinator Ian Linley is overjoyed with how its newly completed greenhouse has turned out after years of paperwork and planning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re stoked it\u2019s completed; it\u2019s been a long-time project of ours,\u201d Mr Linley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was actually part of a 2020-21 Community Infrastructure grant that we received for $10,700 from the City of Greater Geelong, a grant which we almost matched completely, but the entire group is overjoyed to see it finally operational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Linley, Neil Lane and Carmel Smith, who recently passed away, were the three main proponents in managing the grant application.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 591px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/07\/IMG_3485_54409.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"394\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barwon Heads Community Arts Garden co-ordinator Ian Linley under the &#8216;olive arch&#8217;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The greenhouse will make a huge difference to plot holders by extending seasons and creating a larger seasonal window to begin growing produce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople growing tomatoes won\u2019t have to wait until the end of winter as the new greenhouse will provide the warmth for them to grow,\u201d Mr Linley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe greenhouse will also allow us to grow different products that we wouldn\u2019t normally, things like sweet potato and flowers for instance, it just provides the group a chance to try new things as well that we can possibly sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow member and committee member Michael Righetti said completing the greenhouse was a tremendous step forward for the garden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be an asset that everyone will use so well, and it will open up a range of opportunities for garden members, but also the community too,\u201d Mr Righetti said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 581px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/07\/IMG_3482_23254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"581\" height=\"387\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Front to back: Sue Eldridge, Jill Pollock, Emma Pell, Ian Linley and Michael Righetti inside the newly constructed greenhouse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The garden did not apply for any of the city\u2019s grants from the 2021-22 round, but it will look at applying for minor funding in the 2022-23 rounds to address areas that need improving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have enough beds, so we will look to expand the garden in size, we have had some vandalism recently so the installation of a security system is something we will look into, and equipment storage is a big thing for us as well,\u201d Mr Linley said.<\/p>\n<p>People only need a \u201cFriends of the Garden\u201d membership to get access to the garden and the new greenhouse for just $15 per year.<\/p>\n<p>A plotholder or full membership will set members back $80 annually for a full plot and $40 for a half plot.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the garden, located at 38 Geelong Road, Barwon Heads, head to bhcommunityartsgarden.com<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW $20,000 greenhouse will open all sorts of new avenues for a community garden tucked away in Barwon Heads.
