{"id":55294,"date":"2022-07-10T04:30:59","date_gmt":"2022-07-09T18:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=55294"},"modified":"2022-07-10T04:30:59","modified_gmt":"2022-07-09T18:30:59","slug":"barwon-health-nurse-clocks-off-after-48-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/barwon-health-nurse-clocks-off-after-48-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Barwon Health nurse clocks off after 48 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONG-serving Barwon Health nurse Annie Sproules signed off from her last shift at Geelong hospital last month, 48 years after starting her her traineeship there in June, 1974.<\/p>\n<p>Now adjusting to retirement, Ms Sproules said it will be her colleagues that she misses most, some of who she\u2019s worked with for decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a group of us, 10, we call ourselves the nightingales. We\u2019ve been friends for 30 years, all girls who were on night duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For 32 years, Ms Sproules worked the night shift around various sections of the hospital, mainly as a medical nurse, but also in surgical and respiratory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like a big family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2011, I decided to make the big move to day nursing: best thing I did, wish I had done it earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo wonder I had to wear glasses early,\u201d she quipped.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73541\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73541\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73541 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Pool-in-article-2022-07-07T162022.585.png?_t=1657174837\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On her last day or work, Annie Sproules surprised colleagues by her wearing her original uniform from the 1970&#8217;s, &#8220;so they had to refer to me as sister&#8221;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a marker of time, Ms Sproules noted she pre-dated all the Geelong hospital buildings except one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only building that has been there longer is Kardinia House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw all those buildings going up\u2026I\u2019ve worked in them all.\u201d Although it will be her work mates that she most misses, it\u2019s the familiar flow to her days and weeks that will also be notably absent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d been wanting to leave for a fair while, but when I actually retired it was the weirdest feeling. I\u2019ve had 48 years of a routine structure with work, and now that is gone it\u2019s going to take a while to adjust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giving care and comfort to sick people is a prominent trait in Ms Sproules\u2019 family, including her grandmother who having recently arrived in Victoria from Queensland, became the first Otways bush nurse, based in Lavers Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoon after she arrived there was an influenza epidemic,\u201d Ms Sproules said.<\/p>\n<p>Her mode of transport to service the region, including saw millers who frequently incurred severe injuries, was by horse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandfather was a dairy farmer down in Johanna. That\u2019s how she travelled everywhere\u2026 marvellous lady, very strong willed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73543\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73543\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73543 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Pool-in-article-2022-07-07T162426.580.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ms Sproules did 32 years of night shift.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy mum was a nurse also, my sister a mid-wife in Ballarat\u2026 eight of my nieces and nephews and nurses are either paramedics or nurses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on her experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms Sproules said she feels like she avoided the worst of it in her section of the hospital, the Rapid Assessment and Planning Unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was terrible down in ED, but it was okay where I was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we took full precautions, it was quite trying at times in full PPE\u2026it put a lot of strain on staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the hospital coped with it really well, and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Sproules\u2019s wish is that she\u2019s remembered by her colleagues as good nurse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to think they thought of me as reliable, professional and fun to work with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do know that I had a lot of patients enjoyed having me, that\u2019s what was most important to me, caring about people.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONG-serving Barwon Health nurse Annie Sproules signed off from her last shift at Geelong hospital last month, 48 years after starting her her traineeship there in June, 1974.
