I was the head of the Roxy accessories for a while there, and then I decided to go back to uni to do my Dip Ed to go back and do teaching because I wanted to have a family and the design industry was a bit too hectic to do that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was working as the art and design teacher for about 10 years and I\u2019ve just resigned to focus more on my art,\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74826\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74826 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/All-images-20-600x320.png?_t=1658817460\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lauren&#8217;s paintings are full of texture and colour and often heavily inspired by her home on the Surf Coast.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While pursuing her career she\u2019s also managed to raise two children, start a successful bed and breakfast in Hepburn, and keep up her painting and art.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 the family moved from Torquay to Bellbrae, renovating a six-acre bush property.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Lauren stopped full-time teaching to instead run ceramic classes for adults under her business Bellbrae Clay and focus more on her art.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74825\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74825 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-34-600x380.png?_t=1658817453\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In her ceramics, Lauren works with organic shapes and bright, multicoloured glazes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always painted in the background, and I\u2019ve always taught ceramics,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen because of the pandemic I had some friends interested in having a little play around with clay, it\u2019s gotten really popular obviously in COVID. So I started to have a little play around with that and then it really blew up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe listen to \u201980s music and make ceramics and it\u2019s a really good fun creative outlet for women who perhaps haven\u2019t done ceramics since school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-74830 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-34-copy-600x380.png?_t=1658817825\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-74831 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-34-copy-2-600x380.png?_t=1658817830\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74828\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74828\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74828 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-34-2-600x380.png?_t=1658817654\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ceramic tools and examples ready for a Bellbrae Clay ceramic lesson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lauren describes the classes as a calming pause in the middle of a busy life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a rugged bushland\u2026 when you first pull into our driveway, you drive down our road of rugged bushland, and it\u2019s so beautiful just to pull off and you just feel like you\u2019re a million miles away, and the tree are just their authentic selves and the bark\u2019s falling off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just zone out for a bit and enjoy it, and getting out of your busy lifestyle, and then you get to take home a keepsake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lauren has always loved ceramics, and teaching, and enjoys how the two have come together so seamlessly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe process of making something with your hands from start to finish is so nice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I always say to the students that come into the class, if they\u2019re a bit of a perfectionist, I say it\u2019s all about being organic and being handmade and knowing that it\u2019s not mass-produced is really important. It\u2019s all about the experience and getting together and letting the creative juices flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her ceramics, Lauren works with organic shapes and soft colours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do love the organic, not perfect feel and that what I love with ceramics too. As much as I go back and make my pieces perfect, you also have to accept the little imperfections and that\u2019s like the scenery out here as well, it\u2019s imperfect but it\u2019s gorgeous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-74829 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-35-600x380.png?_t=1658817788\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In her painting, Lauren works with colourful landscapes, and is moving towards more abstract pieces.In both her painting and ceramics, she embraces colour and texture with a soft coastal touch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my ceramics and with my classes, I try to do quite organic shapes, then often with coloured glazes.\u201d<br \/>\nNext month her works will be featured in the Surf Coast Arts Trail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do love to throw in the colours, which is a bit like my personality, I guess; I am a bit out there sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bellbrae resident Lauren Barton is an artist, mother, designer, educator, businesswoman, ceramicist and more.
