{"id":57278,"date":"2022-08-22T04:00:33","date_gmt":"2022-08-21T18:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=57278"},"modified":"2022-08-17T15:12:11","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T05:12:11","slug":"pilot-youth-camp-a-success-for-wombats-wish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/pilot-youth-camp-a-success-for-wombats-wish\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilot youth camp a success for Wombat&#8217;s Wish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW camp for bereaved children has completed its pilot run at Queenscliff&#8217;s Cottage by the Sea with promising results.<\/p>\n<p>Child bereavement organisation Wombat&#8217;s Wish held its first youth camp for a dozen children last month and manager Nicki Dunne said she is already advocating for more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m investigating the viability of potentially running these camps every six months, as opposed to annually,&#8221; Ms Dunne said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After attending the camp myself, I saw that it had a really good impact on the kids who attended.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to need an extra camp quite simply to meet the demand. People are becoming more aware of Wombat&#8217;s Wish and what we offer across the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But children seeking to take on the Youth Camp will need to attend our Family Camp first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 347px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/IMG_8082_33790.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"463\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Card games and &#8220;chill-out time&#8221; allowed campers to unwind over the weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Funded through the Anthony Costa Foundation, the weekend camp facilitated group work for participants alongside other bereaved children without parents in attendance, which is a different approach to Wombat&#8217;s Wish&#8217;s Family Camps held throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>The workshops held at the camp allowed children to learn new techniques to deal with grief and develop healthy coping mechanisms without taking on risky behaviours.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 334px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/IMG_8088_25167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"334\" height=\"445\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Campers got a lot of opportunities to go for therapeutic beach walks in Queenscliff.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A doctor also attended the camp to address questions that participants wrote down, informing young people of different solutions while going through difficult times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was certainly a safe space which was one of the sole purposes of the camp, in addition to teaching the kids healthier ways to deal with grief,&#8221; Ms Dunne said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a bunch of fun activities planned as well, things like a boat trip to see the seals and dolphins, but unfortunately due to weather, that particular activity was cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead we implemented several beach walks, a bit of &#8220;chill-out&#8221; time, cards, board games and some additional counselling as well.
