{"id":57289,"date":"2022-08-22T04:00:02","date_gmt":"2022-08-21T18:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=57289"},"modified":"2022-08-17T15:32:21","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T05:32:21","slug":"saints-in-shape-for-strong-finish-to-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/saints-in-shape-for-strong-finish-to-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Saints in shape for strong finish to 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NUMBERS have remained strong at St Mary&#8217;s Sporting Club, with several football and netball teams enjoying success on and off the field.<\/p>\n<p>St Mary&#8217;s president John McMahon was worried junior numbers would dip following the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Saints community is as strong as ever nearing the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were a little nervous that junior numbers would be smaller coming into this season given we understood that people&#8217;s lives might have changed a little bit in the past two or so years,&#8221; McMahon said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But that didn&#8217;t happen to us, our coaches and our volunteers are a large reason for that, they&#8217;re just superstars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me to see the club band together as it did, it was both mind-blowing and impressive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 551px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/292540203_102187400_05848.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"367\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of St Mary&#8217;s junior female football sides warming up. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Beginning with the senior men&#8217;s football side taking out the Geelong Football League&#8217;s minor premiership, the junior football section has also enjoyed strong success.<\/p>\n<p>The players across the Under 9 to Under 12 age groups had a great year and the club is excited to watch the development in these age groups across the year.<\/p>\n<p>The strength of the program, about 150 kids across three age groups, ensures a strong future for junior and senior football at St Mary&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>The Under 14 to Under 16 teams also made finals runs.<\/p>\n<p>The club&#8217;s netball section was competitive in all grades with four teams to compete in the upcoming finals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/IMG_4592_64834.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Under 13&#8217;s Division 1 and 3 netball sides.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Six junior netball sides finished their respective seasons with a ladder position of fourth or higher rounding out a solid junior foundation.<\/p>\n<p>St Mary&#8217;s begun work on its $2.5 million upgrade of the Don Mathieson Pavilion in 2019, but McMahon said 2022 was the first season the club could fully use its new facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The facilities, we started building a couple of years ago, but we hadn&#8217;t used them in full capacity until this year,&#8221; McMahon said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year though they&#8217;ve been flat out, the finances are in a good place right now, so is the function room, but the facilities at the club are very much a major highlight for this season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>St Mary&#8217;s boasts one of the largest clubs in the region with more than 700 players registered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY VINNIE VAN OORSCHOTNUMBERS have remained str [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-secondary understrap-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/saints-in-shape-for-strong-finish-to-2022\/\">Read More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":191,"featured_media":57296,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-57289","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sport"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
