DESPITE the day being spoiled by inclement weather, the Torquay Lions Club raised a record $7,250 at its annual charity bowls day.<\/p>\n
The event, sponsored by Champion Blinds and held at the Torquay Bowls Club, attracted a field of 120 bowlers who managed only one game before rain caused cancellation of the afternoon play. According to Lions president Tricia Blane, the generosity of the bowlers enabled the Torquay Lions to raise a record amount of dollars for disadvantaged children to enjoy an unexpected annual holiday.<\/p>\n
\u201cFour local children have already enjoyed a short holiday at the Lions Licola Village this year and we now have funds available to send another 10 on holidays later this year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs well, because of the record amount raised, we are able to ensure other critical projects supported by Torquay Lions will be funded.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur raffles and sausage sizzles have not raised as much as we expected this summer, but the bowls day result helps overcome the deficiency in income so far this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
She praised the sponsors and donors who strongly supported the day.<\/p>\n
\u201cChampion Blinds donated $1,000 towards the day and their sponsorship of the event was reinforced by the many generous donations from Torquay\u2019s local businesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs well, Torquay\u2019s Bendigo Bank sponsored one youngster to the Licola camp.<\/p>\n
\u201cTorquay business people are generous beyond expectation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are asked by so many local groups to support so many local events that for them to continue providing items request after request is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n
She particularly thanked the Torquay Bowls Club for the loan of their greens and facilities.<\/p>\n
