WITH temperatures around the Surf Coast and the Bellarine reaching 40 degrees last week, people arrived to beaches and rivers in droves.<\/p>\n
Jan Juc was packed on Thursday with locals and tourists as Life Saving Victoria (LSV) once again urged Victorians to keep water safety in mind, particularly on hot days.<\/p>\n
LSV\u2019s operation manager Greg Scott said it was important for people to realise just how dangerous waterways can be even in seemingly calm conditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether you plan to cool down with a swim, paddle or surf, make sure you\u2019re with a friend and be aware and prepared before heading into the water and read and obey safety signs when you\u2019re there.\u201d<\/p>\n
LSV said with a week left of the summer school holidays, children across the state were likely to flock to popular swimming spots to seek respite from the heat.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we encourage people to get outdoors and experience the wonderful waterways Victoria has to offer, we want everyone to come home safely from a day at the beach, river or by the pool,\u201d Mr Scott said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re urging parents and carers to actively supervise children around water with an important reminder that it only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown.\u201d<\/p>\n
For those using the warm weather as an opportunity to take kayaks and paddle craft out on the water, LSV encourages people to think twice about paddling alone and always wear a lifejacket.<\/p>\n
