{"id":5841,"date":"2018-01-29T05:09:14","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T05:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=5841"},"modified":"2018-01-29T05:09:14","modified_gmt":"2018-01-29T05:09:14","slug":"joy-rides-jan-juc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/joy-rides-jan-juc\/","title":{"rendered":"Joy rides at Jan Juc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HITTING the waves this summer is a given for some, but a luxury for others who find navigating the sand challenging with loved ones with a disability.<\/p>\n<p>Brad Papworth from the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club (JJSLSC) said the club joined forces with the Kids Plus foundation to give 12 Geelong children with cerebral palsy a chance to enjoy the surf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing a surf awareness program with Kids Plus, a voluntary physiotherapy group, that runs a week-long intensive program every summer and this year they wanted to come to the beach,\u201d Mr Papworth said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the kids in the program can\u2019t get here because it\u2019s too hard from mum and dad to actually get them onto the beach. It\u2019s all about surf awareness with physio, learning how to walk in the sand and feeling the waves and water pull you out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first year we\u2019ve been involved but as a community club moving forward it\u2019s what we want to do more of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response from our (JJSLSC) kids has been fantastic; we\u2019ve got kids ranging from 14-16 years old putting their hands up to help out and they\u2019re seeing how some kids are not as lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kids Plus physiotherapist and sport and recreation co-ordinator Louise Daniels said the program allows the kids to reach therapy goals in a fun environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt promotes participation because they\u2019re doing stuff within the community and it\u2019s great for the surf club kids to have experience with people who have a variety of abilities, and for them to get to know and work with different kids,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn days like today the kids don\u2019t really feel like they\u2019re doing much therapy stuff, it\u2019s just about having fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A mother of a participant said it was the first time her 22-year-old daughter had been in the waves since she was a little girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wouldn\u2019t even remember the last time we came to the beach. She\u2019s absolutely loving today, it\u2019s beautiful to watch her having fun.
