{"id":6001,"date":"2018-02-01T05:42:25","date_gmt":"2018-02-01T05:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=6001"},"modified":"2018-02-05T12:02:31","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T12:02:31","slug":"australia-day-honours-locals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/australia-day-honours-locals\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia Day Honours for locals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COMMUNITY champions from a range of backgrounds across the Geelong region have been lauded in this year\u2019s Australia Day Honours.<\/p>\n<p>Announced on January 26, the local honours were among 895 approved by Governor-General of Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove.<\/p>\n<p>Queenscliff resident Dr Paul Hemming was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for his distinguished service to higher education administration, to medicine through contributions to a range of professional medical associations, and to the community of central Victoria, particularly as a general practitioner. Dr Hemming has been chancellor of Federation University Australia since 2012, and is a former president of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Victorian branch of the Australian Medical Association.<\/p>\n<p>Lara firefighter Glenn Jennings received the Australian Fire Service Medal (ASFM) for his outstanding commitment to emergency services in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>A 40-year CFA veteran who has established himself as one of Australia\u2019s most respected experts in emergency vehicle driver education and also as an accident investigator, he said he was humbled to have received the ASFM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love my job \u2013 CFA has been my life. We often use the term \u2018family\u2019, but the amount of time you spend on shift does really see your colleagues become your close friends and family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A number of people across the region received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Highton\u2019s Janice Kinloch, for service to women, and to the community of Geelong<\/li>\n<li>Highton\u2019s Dr Peter Mansfield, for service to community history and heritage preservation<\/li>\n<li>Point Lonsdale\u2019s Diana Allen, for service to jazz music<\/li>\n<li>The Bellarine\u2019s Therese McKenney, for service to the community through social welfare organisations<\/li>\n<li>Manifold Heights\u2019 Roger Allen, for service to cricket<\/li>\n<li>Point Lonsale\u2019s Barrie Provan, for service to the community of Queenscliff<\/li>\n<li>Winchelsea\u2019s Major Robert Charles (retired), for service to the community through a range of roles<\/li>\n<li>Winchelsea\u2019s Patricia Collins, for service to the community through the preservation of historical sites, and<\/li>\n<li>Barongarook\u2019s Lynette Harris, for service to women in Victoria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COMMUNITY champions from a range of backgrounds across the Geelong region have been lauded in this year\u2019s Australia Day Honours.
