THE Bellarine community will gather today (Friday, November 11) at 11am to remember those who fought and died for Australia, as part of commemorations for the 104th anniversary of Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n
Simultaneous services will be held at the Barwon Heads community hall and the Ocean Grove cenotaph, starting at 10.45am, and will be led by members of the Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads RSL Sub-Branch.<\/p>\n
Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads RSL Sub-Branch secretary Richard Lewis said the services would conclude shortly after 11am.<\/p>\n
“So anyone should be there early so they can gather in place for proceedings.”<\/p>\n
Each service will involve a wreath laying, dedication and lowering and raising of the flags.<\/p>\n
Corangamite federal member Libby Coker will perform the honour to the fallen by laying a wreath on behalf of the government at the Ocean Grove service.<\/p>\n
Formerly known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day signifies the moment guns fell silent on the Western Front at the end of World War I, and marks the end of the hostilities with the signing of the armistice on November 11, 1918.<\/p>\n
This year also marks 101 years of poppy appeal sales, a fundraiser to help support veterans and their families.<\/p>\n
