{"id":61774,"date":"2022-11-13T04:00:12","date_gmt":"2022-11-12T17:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=61774"},"modified":"2022-11-10T10:51:30","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T23:51:30","slug":"water-advocates-push-for-improved-access-and-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/water-advocates-push-for-improved-access-and-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Water advocates push for improved access and safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWO disability advocates from the Bellarine are co-ordinating efforts to improve water safety and accessibility in the region by teaming up with Life Saving Victoria (LSV) to run a swim program and lobby council for better beach facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned about the rising rate of drowning deaths for older people aged 35-64 years old, Bree-Arne Manley and Katie Alexander of the Bellarine Disability Action Group, along with LSV, are running a free Water Safety Beach Recreation session at Lonsdale Primary School later this month.<\/p>\n<p>The program is designed to help older residents and people with a disability gain the confidence needed to safely enter the water, but the pair are also highlighting that people in these groups also need appropriate places to swim.<\/p>\n<p>Living with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis and using a wheelchair, Ms Manley and Ms Alexander \u2013 who has Myositis (similar to Motor Neurone Disease) and uses a mobility scooter \u2013 say a stair rail, beach matt, water wheelchair and special parking at Springs Beach would help others like them to access the water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nothing but attitudes and access stop me from enjoying this wonderful area with my children and husband,&#8221; Ms Manley said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61778\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61778\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/In-Article-91.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/In-Article-91.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/In-Article-91-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Springs Beach carpark in Point Lonsdale.
