NEW floodlighting and state-of-the-art irrigation at one of St Leonards’ two sports reserves is expected to boost player interest on the eastern end of the Bellarine.<\/p>\n
Home to the Bellarine’s St Leonards Cricket Club and Bellarine Sharks Association Football Club, Lake Reserve’s new $162,506 irrigation system comes as a result of a $65,000 commitment in the 2021\/22 City of Greater Geelong budget, coupled with a Victorian government Community Cricket Program grant of $97,506.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the reserve’s new lighting was one of seven city reserves to be lit up as part of a $2.5 million Victorian government sports ground floodlighting pool.<\/p>\n
Bellarine Ward councillor Jim Mason said the upgrades, particularly the lighting, would have wide-ranging benefits for the Bellarine Sharks committee and their several programs.<\/p>\n
“The addition of the lighting is a boost to tenant clubs in extending their playing and training times, particularly the Bellarine Sharks.<\/p>\n
“Along with their Men’s and Women’s teams, the Sharks cater for a range of ages and ability levels including Mini Roos, Juniors, and Soccer Mums.<\/p>\n
“As well as better delivering existing programs, the new lights mean the club can continue to grow and increase participation rates in the St Leonards community.”<\/p>\n
The ground’s new irrigation system was put to the test immediately, following widespread rainfall and flash flooding across the Bellarine and the rest of Victoria, a new resource thoroughly needed in St Leonards.<\/p>\n
“The developments are an important step in increasing sporting opportunities for members of the St Leonard’s community,” Geelong Cr Peter Murrihy said.<\/p>\n
“The installation of the irrigation system brings St Leonard’s Lake Reserve into line with other grounds across the region and will ensure that participants of all ages will have a safer and more fit-for-purpose ground to enjoy.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
