VICROADS is holding public consultation sessions today (Thursday) and on Saturday for people to have their say on how the intersection at Birregurra-Forrest Road, Colac-Lorne Road and Deepdene Road at Birregurra can be improved.<\/p>\n
The drop-in sessions will be held at the Royal Mail Hotel at Birregurra, and everyone is invited to come along to view early plans, ask questions, share their ideas and give feedback.<\/p>\n
Late last year, the intersection was the site of three crashes in five days, which resulted in one person being killed and 12 people being injured.<\/p>\n
Immediate temporary safety measures were rolled out in the aftermath, with the speed limit lowered from 100kmh to 80kmh and 60kmh, reflective bollards installed to warn drivers of the intersection, and two electronic signs erected on Colac-Lorne and Deepdene roads displaying \u201cprepare to stop\u201d messages.<\/p>\n
Since then, VicRoads has been carrying out a detailed survey and review of this intersection in order to develop long-term options for an intersection upgrade.<\/p>\n
Among the options being considered are the installation of a roundabout, the implementation of an electronic Side Traffic Activated Rural Speeds (STARS) system, and more earthworks to improve sight lines to the intersection.<\/p>\n
Early data from the review has revealed that vehicle volumes have been steadily increasing on all roads leading to the intersection, due to factors such as population growth, increased seasonal tourism and the occasional use of these roads as detour routes from the Great Ocean Road.<\/p>\n
VicRoads south-west regional director Mark Koliba said the accidents that occurred at Birregurra over the Christmas holidays were tragedies.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very important that the time is now taken to properly evaluate all options for an intersection upgrade \u2013 that\u2019s where local knowledge can really help.<\/p>\n
