{"id":62140,"date":"2022-11-26T04:00:41","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T17:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=62140"},"modified":"2022-11-26T04:00:41","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T17:00:41","slug":"salt-shakes-up-regional-fight-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/salt-shakes-up-regional-fight-scene\/","title":{"rendered":"SALT shakes up regional fight scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RESIDENTS, visitors, and combat enthusiasts enjoyed, for the first time ever, high-octane bouts within the surfside backdrop of the Surf Coast over the weekend in the first instalment of SALT Fight Series.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve fights featuring locally trained athletes and fighters from around the state descended on Wurdi Baierr Stadium Saturday to demonstrate their skills in front of a capacity crowd.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 558px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/11\/SaltFS-270_77815.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"371\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rob Pelle defeated hometown hero David Mirabelli via rear naked choke submission in their fight.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Co-organiser Matt Williams was extremely pleased to see so much of the community out and enjoying combat sports on the Surf Coast, in an event that sold out just days after tickets were released.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was pretty special to have the community turn out in such great numbers to support the show,&#8221; Williams said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 555px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/11\/SaltFS-103_69869.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"369\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bones MMA owner and event organiser Matt Williams giving words of encouragement at the stoppage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;There was such a diverse cross section represented in the crowd, from babies with ear muffs on enjoying the pyrotechnics, to grandparents out to support their favourite grandkids!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Spectators enjoyed a dozen fights during the event with a variety of finishes witnessed from the preliminary bouts to the headline act.<\/p>\n<p>Fight 1: Alisha Jane def. David Mirabelli by rear naked choke submission<\/p>\n<p>Williams said he and his team of helpers were thrilled to be a part of history last weekend, hosting the first Surf Coast-based organised fight event and is already looking forward to the next show.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vibe was so positive. Everybody was there for a good time, were welcoming to the opposing gyms and their supporters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/11\/SaltFS-140_86567.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Asha Rachwalski and Sam Bariball go head-to-head in their bout.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We really wanted to make our sport more accessible to the community and show that MMA isn&#8217;t just a bunch of JetSki riding yahoos jacked up on energy drinks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the biggest takeaways was the amount of people who turned out who have never been to a combat sports event before &#8211; and loved it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/11\/SaltFS-78_79233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"311\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong&#8217;s Ngor Aker defeated Lawrence Yum by split points decision.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We have plans to run another show in March, and maybe make a few more fans of MMA in the process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/11\/SaltFS-232_77017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tawny Papaikonomou and Val Sharipov would ultimately go the distance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Torquay local David Mirabelli was one of a handful of local fighters to compete in front of friends and family in an experience he&#8217;ll cherish for the rest of his life, despite not coming away with the win.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was amazing competing in my own hometown in front of all of my friends and family and all of my teammates,&#8221; Mirabelli said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never felt more at home.
