{"id":63246,"date":"2022-12-29T04:56:08","date_gmt":"2022-12-28T17:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=63246"},"modified":"2022-12-22T12:06:46","modified_gmt":"2022-12-22T01:06:46","slug":"seed-athletes-shine-at-geelong-gift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/seed-athletes-shine-at-geelong-gift\/","title":{"rendered":"SEED athletes shine at Geelong Gift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NINE Northern Bay College students showcased their talents on the running track as the annual Geelong Gift made its way to Geelong&#8217;s Steampacket Gardens last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes from across the state descended on Geelong to test their mettle against runners in all distances, but for Northern Bay College&#8217;s Sport, Empowerment, Education and Development (SEED) athletes, the spotlight was all theirs for one race in the state-wide athletic carnival.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87930\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87930\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87930\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/061A6778_80965.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All nine of Northern Bay College&#8217;s SEED athletes warming up on Geelong Waterfront. photos: MARCEL BERENS\/SPORTS MEDIA IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Co-coordinator of Northern Bay College&#8217;s SEED Academy Steven Lewry said each student had a blast taking centre stage at the weekend&#8217;s Geelong Gift.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing the kids take the track was a really big win for our Northern Bay College community and the SEED brand as whole.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The kids really committed to the program, and it was a terrific day as a whole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87928\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87928\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/061A6848_81005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong Gift winner Connie Murray.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The idea to feature a race consisting of local students will hopefully set in motion a pathway for schools to take on other schools at major events hosted by the Victorian Athletics League (VAL).<\/p>\n<p>Lewry, a former VAL athlete, said he is encouraged at the prospect of local schools embracing their running programs<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d absolutely love to see a school event in the future where we run all of our schools, so this could be something I could talk to the VAL about, this could grow big time,&#8221; Lewry added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87934\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87934\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87934\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/061A6660_80956.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Connie Murray winning the women&#8217;s Geelong Gift.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have a vision of school versus school using a professional handicap system, it would be wonderful to see local runners take that on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the professional races of the gift, Maki Loukeris took out the men&#8217;s Geelong Gift final with an adjusted time of 10.74, while Connie Murray crossed the finish line with a time of 11.76 to take out the women&#8217;s Geelong Gift.
