{"id":63768,"date":"2023-01-16T04:00:34","date_gmt":"2023-01-15T17:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=63768"},"modified":"2023-01-12T10:35:36","modified_gmt":"2023-01-11T23:35:36","slug":"vernon-and-cooper-dominate-danger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/vernon-and-cooper-dominate-danger\/","title":{"rendered":"Vernon and Cooper dominate Danger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FORMER Torquay SLSC junior Archie Vernon and Geelong&#8217;s Madison Cooper have come out victorious in the premier Danger 1000 at this year&#8217;s Danger Ocean Swim Series.<\/p>\n<p>Held on Saturday at Torquay Front Beach, the Jan Juc SLSC fundraiser ticked into its 24th year and attracted competitors of varying abilities to take part in the four course lengths (500m, 1km, 2.5km and 5km).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89221\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89221 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/B07K7031-Archie-Vernon-Madison-Cooper-1st-first-winners-men-women-Open-18-29-Danger-1000Torquay-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1673322090\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archie Vernon and Madison Cooper both beat their nearest counterparts by more than 10 seconds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the Danger 1000, Vernon and Cooper were faultless in their attack, slicing through the tricky easterly wind chop with ease.<\/p>\n<p>Vernon finished a whopping 17 seconds ahead of second-placed Brenton Ford with a time of 12 minutes and 45 seconds, while Cooper beat her nearest competitor by 13 seconds with a time of 14 minutes and 12 seconds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89223\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89223 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/B07K6774-Madison-Cooper-1st-winner-women-Fluro-pink-caps-Open-18-29-Danger-1000-Torquay-600x380.jpg?_t=1673322137\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Madison Cooper was the first female out of the water in the Danger 1000.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The former Torquay SLSC junior said he was thrilled to continue his strong form from winning the Rip View Classic into his victory in the Danger Ocean Swim Series.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89219\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89219 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/B07K6497-Women-30-34-Fluro-orange-cap-start-Danger-1000-Torquay-600x380.jpg?_t=1673322053\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 1000 competitors turned out on Saturday at Torquay Front Beach. Photos: PETER MARSHALL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve really focused on going out there and not overthinking it all too much, I just try and enjoy it,&#8221; Vernon said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To finally put a good stretch together makes that hard training in winter worth it, I&#8217;m fully stoked!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89224\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89224\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89224 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/B07K6709-Archie-Vernon-1st-winner-Men-blue-caps-Open-18-29-Danger-1000-Torquay-600x380.jpg?_t=1673322159\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archie Vernon continued his stellar form to win the Danger 1000 overall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the Danger 1000, Noah O&#8217;Donnell and Dakoda Mathers showed their endurance prowess by winning the 5km swim, while Owen Leggett and Zoe Jennings took the mantle in the 2.5km swim.<\/p>\n<p>In the 500m sprint swim, Jennings came out on top again, while David Hughes was victorious in the open male category.<\/p>\n<p>Event organisers also ran a small wade race during the 2.5km and 5km distance marathons for the young junior competitors to introduce them to the Danger Ocean Swim Series.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89220\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89220\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89220 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/B07K6620-Men-blue-caps-Women-fluro-pink-caps-Open-18-29-start-Danger-1000-Torquay-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1673322070\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Competitors took on four different courses (500m, 1km, 2.5km and 5km).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jan Juc SLSC sponsorship and fundraising director Jodie Reyntjes said the club was thrilled to have the event back to pre-COVID participation numbers, and thanked volunteers, participants and their families for being involved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To have 1,000 swimmers was just a fantastic outcome,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also had in excess of 150 volunteers who did long hours and helped us get the course ready.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was challenging swim conditions, some competitors felt pretty seasick, but we had terrific feedback from them that they all felt safe and supported by our volunteers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89225\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89225 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/B07K6522-Women-open-18-29-Fluro-pink-cap-Jemima-Asher-Torquay-Madison-Cooper-Geelong-Zoe-Jenning-Jan-Juc-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1673322179\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Open Women&#8217;s finalists from the Danger 1000.
