{"id":64891,"date":"2023-02-02T15:21:44","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T04:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/liberals-respond-to-maternity-ward-closure\/"},"modified":"2023-02-02T17:47:47","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T06:47:47","slug":"liberals-respond-to-maternity-ward-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/liberals-respond-to-maternity-ward-closure\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberals respond to maternity ward closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG Liberal MPs have taken aim at Epworth Hospital for its decision to close its Waurn Pond maternity ward and have repeated calls for intervention from Labor\u2019s federal and state governments.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yRfxwN5h0as\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/epworth-confirms-maternity-service-will-close\/\">Epworth confirmed this morning<\/a> it would end the service on March 31, meaning about 100 women due to give birth at the facility after the shutdown must make new arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>The decision came despite significant opposition from Geelong families, GPs and politicians who campaigned for the private service to rethink the decision it first flagged in November.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong federal Senator Sarah Henderson hit out at what she called a \u201cheartless\u201d decision today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEpworth HealthCare&#8217;s decision to close its Geelong maternity unit is devastating, and a real betrayal of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegrettably, Epworth has not been transparent with our community. Intent on cost cutting, Epworth has not conducted a genuine recruitment process or provided appropriate incentives to midwives and paediatricians to resolve its workforce shortages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEpworth&#8217;s decision, which leaves many women in limbo midway through their pregnancy, is heartless. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>State Parliament MP Richard Riordan said he was \u201cdevastated\u201d at today\u2019s news, and that the Geelong-Surf Coast region deserved improved health services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Geelong region is the fastest growing region in in Australia and we&#8217;re seeing a reduction in maternity services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis would be not acceptable anywhere else in Australia, it certainly wouldn&#8217;t be allowed to happen in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s not good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a Melbourne press conference today, Shadow Health Minister Georgie Crozier said the closure would put the spotlight on the state government\u2019s promised delivery of a women\u2019s and children\u2019s hospital at Geelong\u2019s University Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will force hundreds of expectant mothers and families across the Geelong region to find new maternity services over coming months, at the very time they should be receiving support and care during what is one of the most important and rewarding periods of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, the onus is on the Andrews Labor Government to reveal when the proposed Geelong Women\u2019s and Children\u2019s Hospital will be completed, and ensure it has adequate birthing suites to service a growing population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Labor South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman, whose electorate covers Waurn Ponds, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/final-decision-on-epworth-maternity-looms\/\">said last month that the future of the private ward<\/a> was \u201ca decision of the Epworth board\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong\u2019s public health service Barwon Health and separate private operator St John of God have previously indicated they have capacity to accommodate Geelong mothers who had planned to give birth at Epworth.<\/p>\n<p>EpworthHealthCare group interim chief executive Cameron Fuller said today that workforce shortages had caused the ward\u2019s closure, indicating the maternity service had just over half the required workforce to be adequately staffed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG Liberal MPs have taken aim at Epworth Hospital for its decision to close its Waurn Pond maternity ward and have repeated calls for intervention from Labor\u2019s federal and state governments.
