UNKNOWN offenders have smashed or stolen about 500 solar lights which have illuminated the Queenscliff Art Prize on the pier, leaving curators disappointed in the destruction of property and the impact on the exhibition.<\/p>\n

Curator Chris MacLeod said the vandalism had occurred since November last year, and expressed his sadness that only a handful of lights remained.<\/p>\n

“Shortly after the artworks had been installed in November, many of the solar lights were stolen and now with just over a month till the end of this unique outdoor art exhibition, I am saddened to announce that all but a handful of the 500 lights have been stolen,” Mr MacLeod said in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n

“A very disappointing outcome\u2026 for those that did not see the exhibition lit up at night, it was a truly beautiful sight.<\/p>\n

“All artworks will remain on the pier until the end of April, so it’s well worth a visit to the historic Queenscliff Pier during daylight hours.”<\/p>\n

Locals also weighed in on announcement, with one expressing condolences.<\/p>\n

“Sad to hear … it’s so great to walk on the pier and look at the great art on display.”<\/p>\n

Another expressed disappointment in saying “that’s devastating, was so beautiful at nighttime\u2026 disrespect at its best”.<\/p>\n

MacLeod has said going forward, the exhibition will not have solar lights due to the fear of them being destroyed again by vandals.<\/p>\n

The Queenscliff Arts Prize is on display on the Queenscliff Pier until April 30.<\/p>\n
