After finishing on the podium for the past five years as a second and third place winner, Thek was thrilled to finally finish first.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67612\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67612 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/03\/2H3A1743-scaled-e1679980594987-433x380.jpg?_t=1679980596\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 1,300 athletes took part in the IRONMAN 70.3 event in Geelong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m feeling pretty great, it was a long time coming, five podiums, finally got that top step this year to make my sixth race here in Geelong and I\u2019m absolutely thrilled to take the win against a classy field of women,\u201d Thek said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Melbourne born and raised and today was particularly special because I had my whole family here, my grandparents even came to watch for the first time\u2026 I had my aunties here, my coach and so much support out on course from fellow Melbourne triathletes and that triathlon community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means a lot, I consider Geelong my hometown race\u2026. I knew I had to work hard to get the win and I\u2019m absolutely thrilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67607\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67607 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/03\/2H3A2468-600x380.jpg?_t=1679980327\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The women&#8217;s winners sharing the podium after Sunday&#8217;s race.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thek crossed the finish line in 4:10:10, almost two and a half minutes clear of 2019 winner Radka Kahlefeldt, with defending champion Lotte Wilms from the Netherlands in third.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s field, New Zealand powerhouse Mike Phillips kept up his winning ways, backing up his victory at the Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealand just three weeks ago with a title in Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips dominated his bike leg, and opened up what was an unattainable lead for his counterparts as he raced out to a five minute lead by the end of the 90km bike leg.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67610\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67610 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/03\/2H3A1987-2-600x380.jpg?_t=1679980421\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kiwi powerhouse Mike Phillips continued his stellar form and took a win in Geelong against a strong field.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty buggered, that was a pretty wobbly last 10km there, probably didn\u2019t help biking that hard but I\u2019m stoked to win,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got a bit of an average start in the swim but I was surrounded by the guys I knew I\u2019d come out with so I wasn\u2019t too worried and I thought my only chance was to take the opportunity on the bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought a few might follow me but I had clear air straight away so I just got to work to get as much of a lead as I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was awesome out there, it\u2019s a challenging bike course, nice swim and the run is quite challenging as well, it\u2019s not your stock standard run course, it\u2019s nice up and down the waterfront.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67611\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67611 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/03\/2H3A2210-600x380.jpg?_t=1679980486\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Splashes of beer were part of the celebrations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67609\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67609\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67609 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/03\/2H3A1907-600x380.jpg?_t=1679980396\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67609\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grace Thek tasted victory in the event for the very first time after finishing on the podium as a second and third place getter on five occasions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For Melbourne\u2019s Grace Thek, it&#8217;s full steam ahead as she endeavours to back up her win in Geelong with a strong performance at the IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside in Oceanside, California tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>More information can be found at, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ironman.com\/im703-geelong\"><strong>www.ironman.com\/im703-geelong<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MELBOURNE\u2019s Grace Thek and New Zealand\u2019s Mike Phillips\u2019 physical and mental toughness rewarded in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s professional titles at IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong.
