EROSION threatening Point Lonsdale front beach will be tackled with a new sand monitoring program and groyne redesign works.<\/p>\n
Bellarine MP Lisa Neville, who was joined at the beach by Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor Susan Salter on Friday, announced the next steps that would be taken to help save the beach.<\/p>\n
Ms Neville said her government would fund a community sand monitoring program at Point Lonsdale\u2019s front beach and a detailed groyne field design to inform further action about the installations.<\/p>\n
This follows a recent report, released last year, which addressed the best ways to manage the front beach.<\/p>\n
Ms Neville said the sand monitoring program would help determine the fluctuating sand levels and what interventions were needed to prevent sand from being swept away and to best protect the beach.<\/p>\n
She said technical groyne design would also be developed, which would consider historical observations about sand movement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know how much Point Lonsdale residents value their front beach, and this process is about ensuring we get a long-term solution to protect the beach for the community for years to come,\u201d Ms Neville said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will work with the community to ensure Point Lonsdale\u2019s front beach continues to provide social and economic benefits to residents, businesses and visitors.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese actions build on measures we have already undertaken to address the issue of sand erosion at Point Lonsdale.\u201d<\/p>\n
