{"id":69597,"date":"2023-05-18T09:11:47","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T23:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/community-turns-out-to-support-classic\/"},"modified":"2023-05-18T09:11:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T23:11:47","slug":"community-turns-out-to-support-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/community-turns-out-to-support-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Community turns out to support Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG&#8217;S Eastern Park was a sea of pink on Mother\u2019s Day with more than a thousand residents spreading the word about breast cancer research and awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong event organising committee member Nikki McKenzie said more than 1,700 people attended Sunday morning\u2019s local Mother\u2019s Day Classic.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/05\/0G2A3935WollieFami_37977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"301\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wollie Family dressed in pink.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe had an amazing turnout, it was 1,778 people that were registered before the event began, but I also expect there may have been an additional 200 people that registered on the day,\u201d Ms McKenzie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, I was stunned by the amount of people there on the day, the overall tone of the day was really upbeat mainly because of what this event stands for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreast cancer is something that affects almost everyone in one way or another, so raising funds for breast cancer research and continuing awareness is vital.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/05\/0G2A4000KerrieZammi_47635.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"417\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kerrie Zammit and Kirsty Palimalse each ran in the event for loved ones lost to cancer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms McKenzie had not attended a Mother\u2019s Day Classic prior to Sunday but was asked to join the committee after facilitating the Welcome to Country portion of the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandmother who I never met, battled breast cancer twice before it took her, so the notion of breast cancer awareness really came into focus for me personally in 2022 and 2023, I had also done some artwork for the McGrath Foundation previously as well,\u201d Ms McKenzie added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 287px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/05\/0G2A3986_77761.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"430\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Event committee member Nikki McKenzie attended her first MDC on Sunday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was lovely to see all the children there with their families, getting their faces painted, wearing tutus, wings and dressed in pink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s terrific to see that the community is learning more about breast cancer awareness at a young age.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/05\/0G2A3979HuxhagenFam_85635.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Huxhagen Family Belinda, son Bodhi, and husband Rowan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Final fundraising totals are still being calculated at the event and national level with all funds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>To keep up to date with the Mother\u2019s Day Classic and to see final participant results, head to <strong>www.mothersdayclassic.com.au<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG&#8217;S Eastern Park was a sea of pink on Mother\u2019s Day with more than a thousand residents spreading the word about breast cancer research and awareness.
