{"id":71469,"date":"2023-06-22T16:38:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-22T06:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/ford-to-cut-400-jobs-in-geelong\/"},"modified":"2023-06-22T16:50:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T06:50:00","slug":"ford-to-cut-400-jobs-in-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/ford-to-cut-400-jobs-in-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"Ford to cut 400 jobs in Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"es-highlight\">FORD<\/span> is set to slash one in five jobs in Australia as part of global cost-cutting.<\/p>\n<p>About 400 roles will go from the Geelong area, union officials said today (Thursday, June 22).<\/p>\n<p>Most will be in\u00a0product development and design with a small number in other areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union&#8217;s Vince Pepi said\u00a0voluntary redundancies would take effect in September.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Approximately 350\u00a0of those (job losses) being white-collar workers and 50 to 45 being blue-collar workers,&#8221;\u00a0Mr Pepi said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand this news will be difficult for many workers and their families and we want to ensure they have all the resources they need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"es-highlight\">Ford<\/span>\u00a0said the cuts were part of a global bid to &#8220;improve efficiency&#8221; and shift operations towards future needs.<\/p>\n<p>Presently, 1,800 workers are employed by the company in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Victorian Jobs and Manufacturing Minister Ben Carroll said the state government would support Geelong&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"es-highlight\">Ford<\/span>\u00a0workers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always difficult when anyone loses a job &#8211; it can be one or it could be 10 or it could be 50,&#8221; he told reporters today<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always felt very hard by those families in those communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have every confidence that we&#8217;ll find solutions for these workers and be able to do tailor-made solutions to support them going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jeremy Crawford said there must be a focus on keeping workers in the region by helping them find jobs in other industries such as advanced manufacturing and renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only will it affect the workers but it will certainly affect some of the local retailers and particularly some of the wider communities these people live in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"es-highlight\">Ford<\/span>\u00a0manufactured cars in Geelong and the Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows until October 2016 when about 600 workers lost their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Holden and Toyota and stopped manufacturing in the state the following year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, <span class=\"es-highlight\">Ford<\/span>\u00a0cut a further 100 jobs in Victoria as the company moved some engineering work to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Development of the Ranger and Everest models will remain in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8211; WITH AAP<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FORD is set to slash one in five jobs in Australia as part of global cost-cutting.
