{"id":72218,"date":"2023-07-10T04:00:08","date_gmt":"2023-07-09T18:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=72218"},"modified":"2023-07-07T16:14:08","modified_gmt":"2023-07-07T06:14:08","slug":"locals-band-together-to-help-rehabilitate-point-richards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/locals-band-together-to-help-rehabilitate-point-richards\/","title":{"rendered":"Locals band together to help rehabilitate Point Richards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 30 brave locals joined staff from Bellarine Bayside in wet and wooly conditions to carry out environmental rehabilitation works at Point Richards in Portarlington.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend&#8217;s community planting day saw locals dig deep and plant in excess of 450 indigenous bushes, grasses, shrubs and groundcovers.<\/p>\n<p>The Point Richards site been a priority of Bellarine Bayside for the past three years due to its lack of native vegetation and being prone to erosion.<\/p>\n<p>Through the efforts of local community groups, the area has been built up with mulch and soil to create a primary dune and filled with a vibrant mix of indigenous plant species for habitat connection.<\/p>\n<p>The revegetation has also been a way of capturing litter before it enters Port Phillip Bay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72219\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72219 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/07\/357444355_6540145667_63136-e1688710205500-309x320.jpg?_t=1688710209\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pam Wilkie planting some of the shrubs at Point Richards.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bellarine Bayside acting planning and environment manager Jane Shearer said tree planting days of this nature would help to continue providing protection for the coastline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe addition of 450 plants this year with the help of the community will really add to the environmental values this site now holds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] contributes to our overall strategic goal of improving the coastal vegetation and creating a buffer along the entire 17 kilometres of coast we manage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were so impressed and thankful for all who showed up and enthusiastically dug in to help protect the local coastal environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72220\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72220\" style=\"width: 268px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72220 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/07\/357509625_6540145634_63367-e1688710284441-268x320.jpg?_t=1688710286\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katherine Legge and Bernard Cannon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bellarine Bayside has two more community planting days coming up, including National Tree Day on Sunday 30 July at the Indented Head Coastal Saltmarsh.<\/p>\n<p>To find out more, head to <strong>www.facebook.com\/bellarine.bayside<\/strong>, or contact Jane on <strong>contactus@bellarinebayside.com.au<\/strong>Katherine Legge and Bernard Cannon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 30 brave locals joined staff from Bellarine Bayside in wet and wooly conditions to carry out environmental rehabilitation works at Point Richards in Portarlington.
