{"id":73913,"date":"2023-08-07T16:52:14","date_gmt":"2023-08-07T06:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/harrison-reaches-new-best-at-us-open\/"},"modified":"2023-08-07T16:52:14","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T06:52:14","slug":"harrison-reaches-new-best-at-us-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/harrison-reaches-new-best-at-us-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Harrison reaches new best at US Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BARWON Heads surfer Ellie Harrison has left Huntington Beach with her head held high following a podium finish at one of the World Surfing League\u2019s (WSL) biggest events.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison secured a third-place finish in the WSL Challenger Series\u2019 US Open of Surfing on Monday morning (Sunday afternoon in the United States).<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old surfing prodigy made it all the way to the event\u2019s semi-final against American Sawyer Lindblad, following two close victories over Hawaii\u2019s Zoe McDougall (12.66 to 12.34) in the Round of 16 and Spain\u2019s Nadia Erostarbe (10.00 to 9.57) in the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison took it to the California native, getting things going with a 5.33 ride to begin the heat.<\/p>\n<p>Lindblad responded with a 6.83 to put herself in the lead, before doubling up on a solid 5.93 run.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison answered the call and edged closer to Lindblad\u2019s lead with the best wave of the final, a 7.17, but ultimately fell short by 0.26 to bow out one round short of the final, which Lindblad would ultimately win over Sally Fitzgibbons.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/EllieHarrison_23USOp_61697.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"412\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barwon Heads&#8217; Ellie Harrison surfs in heat two of the Round of 16 at the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach. Photo: KENNY MORRIS\/WSL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Harrison\u2019s third-place finish was her best placing of the Challenger Series, beating out her previous bests of ninth in the Gold Coast Pro and Ballito Pro.<\/p>\n<p>She also took home 6,085 points for her efforts and now sits in third on the Women\u2019s Qualifying Series standings and 10th on the Challenger Series rankings, five spots short of the Championship Tour qualification line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels amazing, I\u2019ve worked hard this year, so it feels good to have it pay off,\u201d Harrison said following her quarter-final win at the US Open of Surfing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just having fun and it\u2019s good to have the Aussies here cheering me on, it\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was Harrison\u2019s first semi-final appearance on the Challenger Series.<\/p>\n<p>The last two Challenger Series events take place in October.<\/p>\n<p>The EDP Vissla Pro Ericeira takes place from October 1-8, before the series is concluded at the Corona Saquarema Pro from October 14-21.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BARWON Heads surfer Ellie Harrison has left Huntington Beach with her head held high following a podium finish at one of the World Surfing League\u2019s (WSL) biggest events.
