{"id":74126,"date":"2023-08-09T12:41:39","date_gmt":"2023-08-09T02:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=74126"},"modified":"2023-08-09T12:41:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T02:41:39","slug":"bellarine-takes-first-steps-to-restart-relay-for-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/bellarine-takes-first-steps-to-restart-relay-for-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Bellarine takes first steps to restart Relay For Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LEOPOLD-BASED cancer survivor is leading the charge to revive an annual Cancer Council fundraiser on the Bellarine.<\/p>\n<p>Cancer Council\u2019s Relay For Life has not been held on the Bellarine since 2018, but mother of two Lorelle Hardman is keen to get the community event up and running once again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my 10-year anniversary coming up since being declared free of cervical cancer in 2014, I thought it would be great to restart this event,\u201d Ms Hardman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve contacted Cancer Council about the possibility of getting this event up and running again and I was given the green light.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/08\/IMG_1617_86662.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"396\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lorelle Hardman alongside daughter Tenika, 11, and son Kye, 9, at Leopold Primary School. Photo: VINNIE VAN OORSCHOT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms Harman, mother to daughter Tenika and son Kye, is planning to host the event at Leopold Primary School, where both her children attend.<\/p>\n<p>Relay For Life is generally held in October-November, but Ms Hardman said due to planning, the Bellarine event is tentatively slated to be held in March next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had our first committee meeting on Tuesday night and if everyone stays on board, we\u2019ll have a minimum of six members to make the event a reality, with me as chairperson manager,\u201d Ms Hardman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the old saying goes, many hands makes light work, so anyone else who would like to join the committee is more than welcome to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hardman was diagnosed with cervical cancer in August, 2013, following the birth of her son.<\/p>\n<p>Following both chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Ms Hardman was declared cancer-free the following year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/08\/IMG_1633_13765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leopold resident, mother of two, and cancer survivor, Lorelle Hardman is driving the return of Cancer Council&#8217;s Relay For Life initiative on the Bellarine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms Hardman first joined the Relay For Life committee in 2014 before leaving the group following the 2017 event.<\/p>\n<p>Following 2018\u2019s edition of Relay For Life Bellarine, the group folded and has not been run since.<\/p>\n<p>Australians participate in over 200 relays across Australia each year and encourages fun and moving events to raise vital funds for Cancer Council&#8217;s research, prevention, and support services.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in joining Relay For Life Bellarine\u2019s new committee can do so by contacting Kelly Fuery at Cancer Council at kelly.fuery@cancervic.org.au<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LEOPOLD-BASED cancer survivor is leading the charge to revive an annual Cancer Council fundraiser on the Bellarine.
