{"id":74369,"date":"2023-08-15T17:07:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T07:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/geelong-korea-cuts-ties-with-abl\/"},"modified":"2023-08-15T17:07:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T07:07:17","slug":"geelong-korea-cuts-ties-with-abl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/geelong-korea-cuts-ties-with-abl\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong Korea cuts ties with ABL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTRALIAN Baseball League (ABL) team Geelong Korea will not take part in the upcoming 2023\/24 season, in an announcement made by the national competition body earlier today.<\/p>\n<p>The ABL will return to its original six-team model ahead of next season, which won&#8217;t include the Geleong-based club.<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said it was a &#8220;really disappointing decision&#8221; for the club and the wider community of Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeelong-Korea is a unique club and one that bore the brunt of the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d Cr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have liked to see the club given more time and support to re-establish in the ABL, which would help grow the sport locally and capitalise on its international potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/3V5A0684-2_79479.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"434\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Geelong councillors Ron Nelson and mayor Trent Sullivan enjoy a Geelong Korea game with club executives. Photos: ABL MEDIA\/SMP IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Geelong Korea\u2019s exit from the ABL comes four months after New Zealand team, Auckland Tuatara, went into liquidation and separated from the competition in April.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Korea, primarily made up of Korean players seeking international competition during the Korean off-season, returned to the ABL prior to 2022\/23 after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball Australia CEO Glenn Williams said the decision was reached after thoughtful consideration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this is a tough decision and we are certainly sad to see Geelong Korea leave the Australian Baseball League, the decision has been made following in-depth consultation with all parties, and in the best interest of the Australian Baseball League, fellow teams, corporate partners, and fans of the game,\u201d Mr Williams said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/3V5A0871-2_79547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"496\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong Korea returned to the ABL in 2022, after COVID-19 caused a two-year absence for the club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Williams also thanked the Victorian Government and the City of Greater Geelong for their dedication to the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor an international team located in Australia it hasn\u2019t been easy,\u201d Mr Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe support shown by the Victorian Government and Geelong City Council of GK, and baseball more broadly, has been unwavering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all grateful for the support shown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) and its teams have been major supporters of GK and the ABL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSending some highly talented players who have thrilled fans ABL fans.
