{"id":75057,"date":"2023-08-27T19:46:41","date_gmt":"2023-08-27T09:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/thomson-shooters-too-strong-for-persistent-devils\/"},"modified":"2023-08-27T19:46:41","modified_gmt":"2023-08-27T09:46:41","slug":"thomson-shooters-too-strong-for-persistent-devils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/thomson-shooters-too-strong-for-persistent-devils\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomson shooters too strong for persistent Devils"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">THOMSON will move onto Week Two of the Geelong &amp; District Netball League (GDNL) Finals in back-to-back years after a strong 51-42 win over Corio this afternoon (Sunday, August 27).<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Tigers led from the first whistle, opening up an 18-11 lead over the Devils at the conclusion of the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Corio\u2019s defenders provided some assistance in the second quarter, which translated to scores up the other end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Devils reduced its deficit slightly before half-time, but still trailed 29-24 at the main break.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81927\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81927\" style=\"width: 888px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81927 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/IMG_4048-scaled.jpg?_t=1693129054\" alt=\"\" width=\"888\" height=\"592\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81927\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thomson shooter Cheyenne Philpott going against Corio defender Sophie Trezise near the net.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Corio made several attempts at a comeback in the second half, but Thomson had all the answers, leading by six at three-quarter time and then ultimately winning the contest by nine goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Thomson\u2019s shooters Cheyenne Philpott and Emma Witham both made the most of their attempts, shooting \u00a0at more than 80 per cent accuracy and scoring 35 goals and 16 goals respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Corio playing-coach Shayna Brown (24 goals) and Kailah-Mae Keepen (18 goals) did their best in the attacking third, but Thomson\u2019s strength up front as one of the highest scoring sides in the competition was on full display.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81929\" style=\"width: 784px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81929 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/IMG_4054-1-scaled.jpg?_t=1693129324\" alt=\"\" width=\"784\" height=\"522\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Corio shooter and playing-coach Shayna Brown finished with 24 goals.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Thomson\u2019s Morgan Byrne, Skye Wellington, and Courtney Leith were named best on court for the Tigers, while Corio\u2019s Molly Gribble and Sophie Trezise were listed the same for the Devils.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Thomson will lock horns with Werribee Centrals next Sunday, September 3 in the Elimination Final, while Corio will start preparations for season 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THOMSON will move onto Week Two of the Geelong &amp; District Netball League (GDNL) Finals in back-to-back years after a strong 51-42 win over Corio this afternoon (Sunday, August 27).
