{"id":75472,"date":"2023-09-04T09:54:47","date_gmt":"2023-09-03T23:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=75472"},"modified":"2023-09-04T09:57:43","modified_gmt":"2023-09-03T23:57:43","slug":"progress-for-queenscliffe-maritime-museum-pv-mavis-iii-restorationprogress-for-mavis-restoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/progress-for-queenscliffe-maritime-museum-pv-mavis-iii-restorationprogress-for-mavis-restoration\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress for Queenscliffe Maritime Museum PV Mavis III restoration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>QUEENSCLIFFE Maritime Museum\u2019s (QMM) vision to restore one of its most treasured collection pieces is a step closer after it marked the start of a further stage.<\/p>\n<p>Bellarine MP Alison Marchant joined QMM representatives on Friday (September 1) to turn the first sod on a \u201cpilot jetty\u201d to its Pilot Vessel Mavis III exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>The project will provide a ramp for universal access to the display and a viewing platform to allow patrons to get up close with the historic vessel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/queenscliffe-maritime-museum-grant\/\">PV Mavis III<\/a> served 26 years transferring pilots through the dangerous waters known as \u201cthe Rip\u201d, from the Bass strait into Port Phillip Bay. She became part of the museum\u2019s collection in 2020 after her final journey.<\/p>\n<p>Repair of the ship is ongoing, which will include internal upholstery, hull and gunnel restoration.<\/p>\n<p>The walkway project received funding from the state government\u2019s Universal Design Grant program last year.<\/p>\n<p>QMM president June Negri said on Friday that the museum was grateful for the support to improve its visitor experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce completed the walkway will provide a great view of the pilot launch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdults, children, and wheelchair visitors will all be able to see into the cockpit and cabin, our volunteers will have safe access to the cabin for restoration and maintenance purposes, and on special occasions we will be able to show visitors into the cabin and engine room, under supervision of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the Universal Design Grant, a listening post will be installed on the walkway allowing all visitors to hear the story of the Mavis III and some of her more exciting moments when in service with the Phillip Sea Pilots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Marchant said it would add to the already impressive Mavis III exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s really important to have that accessibility so all people of all abilities are able to experience this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I&#8217;m really pleased that a grant was able to be secured last year to do this work.
