{"id":76815,"date":"2023-09-29T04:00:29","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T18:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=76815"},"modified":"2023-09-27T15:41:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T05:41:46","slug":"torquay-take-the-title-at-victorian-abb-qualifier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/torquay-take-the-title-at-victorian-abb-qualifier\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay take the title at Victorian ABB qualifier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY Boardriders Club has locked in their spot at the Australian Boardriders Battle National Final after taking the win at the Victorian qualifying event.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria&#8217;s nine boardriding clubs were spoiled with pumping two to three feet waves at Cape Woolamai, Phillip Island for competition on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The quality of surfing was lifted to meet the conditions, with teams putting on a great show for not only the crowds on the beach but those watching the live stream.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay Boardriders stamped their authority early in proceedings by scoring the highest ever heat total at a Victorian Australian Boardriders Battle qualifier in their semi-final matchup.<\/p>\n<p>The team scored 46.55 combined points, including a 9.93 and a 9.40 from team captain Xavier Huxtable.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_117825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117825\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-117825 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/TorquaybrXavierHuxtable_NC_0F3A5477-scaled.jpg?_t=1695774003\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-117825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Xavier Huxtable led from the front for Torquay Boardriders and scored a 9.93 and 9.40 in the semi-final.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Huxtable and his team-mates took their momentum into the final and go toe-to-toe with 2022 event champions Peninsula Surfriders, Phillip Island and dark horse Jan Juc Boardriders.<\/p>\n<p>Both Torquay and Jan Juc got off to a hot start, but Peninsula took a lead in the early moments with a strong score from Willem Watson.<\/p>\n<p>The midway point of the heat saw a flurry of high scores come through including a 7-point ride from Jan Juc surfer Carly Shanahan, a 7.37 from Phillip Island&#8217;s Sage Goldsbury and a 7.40 from Xavier Huxtable.<\/p>\n<p>With his strong score, Huxtable narrowly elevated Torquay into first place.<\/p>\n<p>Huxtable said he was thrilled to help book his club&#8217;s spot in the National Final at Burleigh Heads in March 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was an awesome day at Woolamai with perfect tag team conditions and good weather.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was great to get the team together again and surf in a tag team event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was stoked that we were able to go on and perform so well as a team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_117826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117826\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-117826 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/PhillipIslandBR_NC_0F3A5696-1-scaled.jpg?_t=1695774003\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-117826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phillip Island surfer Sage Goldsbury in action.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Former club president Cahill Bell-Warren said he was incredibly proud of the teams&#8217; efforts to dig deep on the day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was such an epic day at Woolies, our focus was to qualify for the Burleigh national final.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Winning is just a step in the right direction.
