Only recently we saw wallaby scats, and that was huge for us as an organisation to see native species returning back to the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76893\" style=\"width: 757px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76893 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-scaled.jpg?_t=1695886737\" alt=\"\" width=\"757\" height=\"505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6872-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 757px) 100vw, 757px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Swan Bay Environment Association president Greg Parry is encouraging anyone in community to attend Sunday&#8217;s War on Weeds event in Point Lonsdale this Sunday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The weeding event, created as part of the month-long Geelong Nature Festival, will focus primarily on the removal of prevalent woody weeds, namely polygala.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from South Africa, polygala is highly invasive, particularly near coastal shrublands and can grow up to two metres in height.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Parry says polygala is quite an easy weed to remove because it doesn&#8217;t drop seeds back into the soil bed, as long as the root is fully removed.<\/p>\n<p>The association, which meets once a month to strategise its nature projects across Swan Bay, Queenscliff, and Point Lonsdale, experienced a severe dip in memberships throughout 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Association secretary Eva Mutton said total member numbers dropped to as low as 90 during that time but has since increased to 150 today, allowing the community group to conduct a greater number of projects across the Borough of Queenscliffe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an exciting time for the association.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/IMG_6888_30273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"496\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Swan Bay Environment Association secretary Eva Mutton pulling out a polygala root.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re always encouraging new volunteers to join up and the newly expanded Nature Festival will allow us to showcase to the wider community the work we are doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s War on Weeds event will run from 9.30-11.30am.
