STAR OF the Sea Retirement Village in Torquay is inviting members of the public to come and experience the benefits of their village firsthand.<\/p>\n
From an array of craft activities to tai chi, indoor and outdoor bowls, a book club, gym classes, crochet and card nights and regular outings, Star of the Sea understands the importance of providing a curricular rich in opportunities.<\/p>\n
A craft group is one of the many creative activities offered and resident Jo-Anne Hyde said they have 20 members all up that meet weekly to share their love of craft.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very pleasant time, we have a cup of tea, a chat and somebody always brings a new pattern or idea to keep us thinking,\u201d Ms Hyde said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe laugh and we talk a lot. We talk about the next project and everybody always admires each other\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she believed there were many health benefits in creative hobbies like craft.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile you are creating things you feel positive, anything creative you do there\u2019s a satisfaction you get from it and I think that\u2019s got to add to your mental wellbeing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The craft group enjoy giving back to the community with special projects including over 70 knee rugs for the neighbouring Star of the Sea Residential Aged Care to give to new residents as a welcome present.<\/p>\n
They also knit scarves, indoor slippers, gloves and hats for children who visit local charity, Cottage by the Sea.<\/p>\n
Star of the Sea is inviting everyone to come along to their open day on Thursday, March 22 from noon to 2pm.<\/p>\n
This event will be a great opportunity to learn more about what life is like at a retirement community, meet staff, residents and look around its modern facilities.<\/p>\n
